i have always called the CIWS that. i didn't realize it was widespread enough that they would call it that on Wiki.

in the current US Military it is.

And it may be in the world, i thought the MI-26 'Halo' had the same capability but no, it's to heavy, it fails by 200kg ,the take of weight is aprox. the same as the C-130E, 56 tonnes iirc.

One thing I don't understand is the fighter jet lineup of the Russians.

They have these planes-
SU-27
Mig-29
Mig-31 (I know this is an interceptor though)
Maybe there are more, I just don't remember them off the top of my head.

Don't they all sort of overlap each other though?

And I see the same sort of thing with our jets too.

Overlap in what way?

All the different jet's have different roles as well as specifications. Some are more suited for ground attack, others for air dominance, navy use, interceptor, delivery of payloads at long distances, etc.

About the Topic: did you know that the F-18 prototype (YF-17) was the direct competitor of the F-16 for the deal of the century (the choice for a NATO fighter), it was later enlarged and used to develop the F-18 Hornet.

i cant help with the russians, i am not as familiars as i maybe should be with them. but the american planes i am all over.
F-14 is an air superiority fighter. keep other planes out of the sky. it was basically designed as a platform for the phoenix missile. it was also a carrier based plane, so could go anywhere there is water.
F-15 has the same purpose as the 14, although no phoenix and can't land on a carrier. thereby restricting where it can take off and land from.
F-16 is a cheap, high volume plane. air superiority and some small levels of ground attack. also land based. it really exists because it woudl have been far too expensive to build all F-15s
F/A-18 is a multipurpose plane. equally adept at air superiority and ground attack. has the distinction of being the only plane that has dropped a precision guided bomb and shot down an enemy plane in one sortie. it is carrier based and is also flown by the USMC for air cover for marines on the ground.
The superhornet is just a larger version of the hornet. it was developed as a sort of replacement for the 14.

EDIT: another eason for multiple airframes is that if there is a defect that grounds the entire airframe, your entire air force isnt grounded.

Ah, that makes sense. The F-14 will be retired though.

But is the JSF/Lightning going to replace a large majority of those planes? I know the F-22 is going to be the new F-14, but that's not a carrier based plane. So I guess the Superhornet is going to replace the F-14?

the F-14 is already gone. so the Navy Jet fleet is all FA-18s. that is a correct about the superhornet replacing the F-14, larger with a much higher payload. the F-22 did carrier landing trials, but was deemed too expensive and too fragile for sea duty. the F-22 is really a replacement for the F-15 which shoudl be going away soon.

the F-35 will be replacing the older hornets and filling a gap for a small fighter the navy hasnt had for a long time. probably since the F-4. it will also, on the marine side, replace the harrier. with its VSTOL capability it is ideal in close in air support situations.
