was invited to judge at the premier Louisville Concours d'Elegance at Churchill Downs this past weekend.
The entire concours was first rate. The Saturday night Black Tie fundraiser ($175 a seat) was great. There were bourbon tasting stations all over the place. There was a Veyron, Duesy, Ferrari Tour de France and California Spider and a 31 Packard with 300,000 miles on display. The fundraiser took in probably 35 grand from an auction which went to a very worth while institution.
The concours the next day went as well as a first year concours could go. There were some hiccups but overall a job well done. There were plenty of great cars in the show and I expect next year to be only better.
I ended up judging the Ferrari class and that was very difficult. There were some real heavy hitters on the ground with a 57 410 SuperAmerica (all original same owner for last 35 years, Pebble Beach class winner and my pick for best of class), 59 250 GT LWB California Spider (picked up at auction for 4.5 million last year) 59 Tour de France competition car, 60 Super America SWB (1 of 6 with no speedo since the owner custom order with tach only so the wife wouldn't complain about his speeding).
I spent so much time judging the Ferraris and helping with the sports cars that I never got a chance to really see the rest of the field.
Here are a couple of shots from the show.
