Would a rollcage and some other safety gear help? If the car is cheap and slow, there's not much danger from that, and the safety gear might help if a bike crashes into you...
This is getting awfully expensive and impractical.

not only that, it is a no-go.

Don't. Aside from being boring to drive it's a seriously overpriced car. If you really need a C-segment VAG car buy a Leon or an Octavia. Or since you can't a Golf.

Driving the ring is not recommended for the faint hearted or over-cautious.
The problem isn't bikes per se ... in fact they often are the unwitting victim .. but the mix of vehicles and speeds. If you go at a busy time, as said, can be a nightmare and the track often closes for 20-30 minutes regularly to pick up pieces. However, there are "quieter" times if you just want to be able to say you did it !
Most rental companies will NOT let you take the car on the 'Ring ... however there are some specialist rental companies who will give you a 'ring car
If you are only going to make it there once, then I recommend getting a Ring-Taxi booking ( can take 3 of you at the same time and do a sub 10 lap all for 70 euros each )
OR go out with the Alfa 75 crowd, they do drives, tuition and rentals.
Best advice at Ben Lovejoys excellent site .. Ben Lovejoy's Nurburgring Nordschleife website and many others. See links of Ben and 20832 - Nürburgring & Nordschleife - von Mike Frison sites.
HOWEVER, whislt I'll always say dont' be too negative or over-protective, remember it can hurt. If taking own car then you CAN get 'Ring insurance for about £180. Most of the RX-8 guys I organsied going out decided to take it. Nobody needed it BUT a BMW Z4 did flip 20 yards in front of one of our club guys and finally if you're lucky and have as much hutzpah as my mate, you can get a pic with Sabine

I might have an idea.. Let me ask after autumn vacations if our school's banger Ford Sierra is still for sale. It's fully equipped for the track, including 2l Cossie engine, DTI engine management with datalogging, koni shocks all around and carbon rollcage. Others as well, but it never raced unfortunately due to bad management of my school.

    WARNING !

The cost of breakign a car isn't the biggest issue.
IF you cause an accident which damages teh armco you pay to get it replaced. If they ahve to call on truck .. you pay. If they have to get medical support .. you pay. If they have to close the track for an extended time .. you pay for the "lost revenue".
Heard of a $30,000 bill a couple of years back !!!!!!

Is it possible to take-out insurance to cover such liabilities in addition to the insurance to drive on the 'ring?

I ask because I'd like to make the trip eventually (once I own a suitable car), but the possibility of a bill that crushing would deter me.

Which is what a proper track insurance will cover. Last year i took a special one before heading onto the ring with my Alto. If anything happens, it is better to be prepared for it.

I mean if you aren't from the country, you have to be 18 if it's your own car, otherwise it's either 21 or 25 to drive a borrowed car. I could drive my car in France in 7months but I can't drive my Grandparents (they live in France) Peugeot or Mercedes for another 3/7yrs

I would visit every automotive museum you could get your hands on.

But I don't know much about where it is in Europe. But this is a cool thread, just in case I ever do visit Europe.

I meant one of the specialty Nurburgring places, as above. I would definitely not take out regular rental car out.
