i really like the FX35. If it came in RWD and not AWD, i would have considdered buying it instead of the G. I do think any new infiniti is a bit much for a first car.

an older one would be good. an old G20 woudl be a fantastic car. a neighbor a few years younger than me had one as his first car, and it was great. small, rwd, and not too powerful.

    edit: my mistake, fwd.

Why get an SUV? It just goes slower, uses more fuel and has worse handling.

I also am for the beater as first car idea.

The most logical solution IMHO would be to buy a second hand Honda with a manual transmission. Tell your mother that statistically manuals are more safe than autos because they require more driver attention. Weather it takes 6 months or 2 years, once you feel confident in your abilities take them up on their offer to buy a high performance machine. Even in a 4000lb car 360 hp is alot. Too much for an inexperienced driver in my opinion.

Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow

If you can't convince your parents to get you a manual, try to get lessons and then ask them.
"Kimi, can you improve on your [race] finish?"
"No. My Finnish is fine; I am from Finland. Do you have any water?"

I don't understand why his parents wouldn't let him have a manual though...

They think it takes attention off of driving. I have pushed the opposite but they just went "shoosh, no manual".

I'm sure if I push a little harder I could get them to budge...

    It's an American thang.
Slushboxez are too engrained in the culture, and manuuals are too far from the mainstream.

Yeah, but maybe my dad will drive it every so often, but I doubt it.

    XD
My dad always says that the clutch will have to be replaced every so often, and that just strikes me as a petty excuse...
