how do you mean? usually they're larger compared to supercars - taller (but not wider i guess), bigger cabin, etc etc

true. but then the old silvia series all clocked in at 1100-1200kg, as recent as 2002, same with the integra's if they count.

As has been discussed recently it's gizmos, safety equipment, growing dimensions with every generation,...

well, the thing with the 350Z is that it's not that much more complex, it's still pretty basic like an S15. i guess it's just conceptually bigger to start with, but still.

Well. It's a V6 for a start. And it was designed with current regulations in mind. And comfort requirements since it's a more upmarket car. The older Silvia didn't have such constraints, or at least not the Z's extent.

i don't want to bring stereotypes into it, but one was designed in japan and the other in the US..

The problem with the 350Z's weight is the SUV/crossover/large sedan chassis they started with.

But hey, you want fast, you want it tech-laden, and you want it cheap, but there's no free lunch. If you don't want $300,000 carbon-fiber GT-Rs, you'll need to suck it up and accept it.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

isn't the 350z chassis much stiffer then the s15? could that be where weight goes?
