Exclamation GM, Mercedes-Benz cut back on sports sponsorships

    12-17-08

General Motors says it won’t renewing its sponsorship with the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Pirates and, potentially, the Daytona 500, as it attempts to cut back on advertising and marketing spending. Meanwhile, German automaker Mercedes-Benz says it plans to drop its sponsorship deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Interestingly, I read Audi and Toyota will be picking up sponsorship for the Yankees where GM left out.

Maybe we will see an R8 next to an LF-A at New Yankee Stadium.

Ford should sponsor the Dodgers, cause the colors match.

I never understood those sponsorships. I feel like the returns aren't worth nearly the investment.

Ya, unless they're a completly unknown company, just brand name advertising, doesn't make sense to me. New products, I kinda get, but just the brnad doesn't make sense.

I sorta feel that as well but if they are willing to pay they are clever and may be right.

Then again, many businesses have made stupid ad decisions. I think of corporate stadium names - are they worth it? Does hearing the Leaf's arena referred to as the Air Canada Centre make me want to fly on Air Canada?
