Go for the ALFA friend, its one of the most reliable cars on the market and always was. Try it and buy it. Mother will enjoy it and she will love you for what you did for her...
I'm just an oldhustler trapped in a hotrodders world
I have been doing so much with so little for so long I can do anything with nothing.
Fiberglass is traditional.From Malmesbury,South Africa
Checked NZ Prices at least of the Merc Kompressor coupe thingy and theres a 2003 one with 53,000km for equivilent of 17,800 aussie dollars. I was quite suprised about the depreciation there.
So, in conclusion ....there is nothing which can compare with a GTV?
Mercs are OK, but kinda boring compared to an Alfa.Originally Posted by Roach

Big cities suck

I've sen a couple of ads for lowish km Peugeot 406 V6 manual coupes, albeit under your price range. The newer 407 was also available here in manual
I've also noticed those seemingly bargain priced GTVs, and lots of them too as you say. The V6 looks and sounds great and I read that Alfa's 4cyl is still a very likeable engine. As with any Alfa it might pay to get an insurance quote pre-purchase to avoid an expensive surprise
I'm sure you've thought of 'em already, but other high-depreciation 'wild cards' that could hold appeal to your Mum might include those MG (Rover) sedans, or maybe Jaguar X and S?
OK, time for an update.
The faithful sedan decided to start letting go of it's piston rings earlier than expected and the time could not be afforded to wait for a good Alfa.
Got a Civic...

They're nice cars but don't get in a front end fender bender.
NRMA tests say that'll cost you $7,000 :O
Other than that, nice car. Not Italian mind you

It's a quality product, though. My friend has a CivHy and it serves as a transportation module very well. Not terribly interesting to drive, but a solid car.
Also, and I don't know if they're the stock speakers or not, but my friend's car has really tight and precise bass.
"Kimi, can you improve on your [race] finish?"
"No. My Finnish is fine; I am from Finland. Do you have any water?"
I like the current Civic, one of my favorite hatches.
I think its style, despite being subjective, is much better than the majority of its contenders. I'm not saying it looks better, but that it has a better design, not usual, not boring, not copy and paste, not average. Than you can hate it, but at least there is something to discuss about.
The new Fiat Bravo for instance is good looking, but even pretty boring. The right average family hatch probably, so exactly what it should be, but not something style-interesting.
Or just consider the Golf.
Plus, I love the last gen interior.
Which engine is it?
