    2010 Mazdaspeed 6 / MPS

280hp Mazda6 MPS on their way

The Mazda Performance Series, or MPS, is what we’ve come to know in the U.S. as “Mazdaspeed.” It’s quickly becoming one of the defining characteristics of modern-day Mazdas, and with the releases of the new Mazda6 and its baby brother, the Mazda2, we’ve been anxiously awaiting Mazdaspeed’s tweaked versions of both vehicles.

In addition to getting the scoop on the new Evo MR and STI Spec C, AutoExpress has got the goods on Mazda’s two new hot offerings. A concept version of the Mazda6 MPS will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, complete with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four, sending 280 hp to all four wheels, and sprinting to 60 in six seconds. Naturally, the Mazda6 MPS (or Mazdaspeed6 when it makes the trek to U.S. shores) will be sporting an aggressive front clip, spoiler, side skirts, bigger wheels, a stiffer suspension and upgraded brakes when it goes on sale in 2010.

I really am not impressed by this, increase in 4hp and larger. Why wouldnt they used the engine from the 2009 6 and throw a turbo on it. I could see a market if they got 330 or so hp out of the v6 while retaining the awd. Especially if they kept the base models under $30,000.

    I agree.
It would have been way smarter to use a single or biturbo V6...

I think the turbo four makes perfect sense for it.

However, there haven't any mules spied or anything so I'd be wary about it.

A 3.X turbo V6 would seem to suit this much better. I definately agree Sledge.
I don't think cranking up the boost on the 2.5 would be advisable.
With ~300hp from a turboed 2.5l with 4WD does anybody see this losing sales to the Impreza?

Not if they can price it low enough, no?

The V6 is more expensive to forcibly induce and I don't think it's available worldwide. Using the 4-cyl means it'll be cheaper to maintain across all territories and cheaper to sell.. thereby not losing so many sales to the Impreza.

I'm sure if there's enough demand, Mazda will make an uber Mazda6 with a twinturbo V6.
    ...hopefully

The old MazdaSpeed 6 had a wagon version, right?

Any chance of a wagon 6, or did they delete the wagon altogether this time?

I don't believe the U.S. ever had a Speed wagon model and as far as I know I don't think any market did. As far as a regular wagon (again, just for the U.S. market), they ended production of the wagon a year or two before the sedan version I think because a lack of demand. They seem quite rare. I'd say a wagon is very unlikely for this new model.
