    new car for mum

    So the Toyota is approaching 300,000km and a replacement finally seems to be on the way!

    requirements are:
    at the very oldest 2002
    around $10-12000NZ (5100-6100 US or 4000-4700 euro)
    Under 3.0l (under 2.5l would be best)
    reliable
    sedan/wagon

    Quite a few options open really, Toyota Camry, Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6, Nissan Primera, Holden Vectra can be found for around 10-12000 for a 2005-2006 example. mums also keen on the Saabs and Volvo's which can be had for that price if you go to 2003 or so.

    go for the Volvo, no matter which (apart from the S80), definitely a family car.

    Of the ones you mention I like the 9-5, especially the pre-facelift one. It's different and the Aero has to be a blast (altough I doubt you can find one for under 5000€).

    The one that seems to be most common for that price is the 2.0l linear low pressure turbo model. which I'm sure wouldn't be too bad on the performance stakes. An aero would be a real find but I wouldn't hold my breath!

    Even if it's not the Aero go for it. It's the more individual of the bunch, gives you turbocharged acceleration but still is reasonably sensible and reliable.

    210.000 km, only the clutch replaced at 190.000 km. the 1,9 diesel.

    The 2005ish Accords are more expensive than the others mentioned, and if we were looking at earlier model ones well I think a Saab or Volvo would be a better option.

    Found a 2001 BMW 728i in the price range too...another thing to consider!
