Yeah, of all things, why a Lotus V8?

No, that'd probably be an LS1.

that's the usual gearbox put behind yank V8's for this sort of thing isn't it, but yeah him being the designer explains a lot

In 2000 it wasn't available yet.

And if I want to nitpick the LS1 didn't produce 350bhp until 2001...

(In fact I saw some dyno numbers for a standard Corvette C5 from a spanish magazine and it was more like 310-315bhp)

So I guess this car was built in 2000?

    I don't know how you know/where you found out the LS1 didn't have 350 hp until 2001 - you have mystery sources/memory.

I was saying that in general the cheapest 350 hp engine today would likely be an LS1. However, this is a sheer guess.

Yes this car was built in 2000.

And my mystery source is... wikipedia. I know not the greatest of sources.

This sort of agrees with me (I told I was nitpicking).

I scanned the Wiki LS article - not hard enough apparently.

No less, it seems to me that the LS1 would be far more practical and cost-effective but this choice makes it interesting and as we saw there is some link in place to make it a Lotus engine. If it was just an LS1 - it'd just be like another Cobra kit car, but this is probably one of a kind - for better or worse.

When was it that Lotus abandoned natural aspiration on road cars?

From memory I'd say they always offered versions with cars with normally aspirated engines. The Elite, the Eclat, the front wheel drive Elan and the Elise with a selection of normally aspirated engines as far as I can remember.

I thought the Elise/Exige were turbocharged. Well, I hate the looks of them, but a Vauxhall VXR 220 would do the job, and it Forza Motorsport is anything to judge a car by (I know it's not) then it's fun to drive too!

IIRC there were two versions, normally aspirated and turbocharged.

The hint of a very wide rear peaking out in the first photograph gave it away for me

given the smallish displacement of the lotus engine a 1UZFE probably makes more sense (at that time) as an alternative

But it barely has 290-300bhp, whereas the Lotus has 350bhp.
