    Best handling Classic car

    Relating to a post here...

    http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum...dling-car.html

they did not cover cars of the classic era. And maybe we need to sub devide this thread into:
    1. Sport and racing cars.
    2. Production cars.

If i need to submit my thoughts here i think the following. Best handling production car was first the Mini Cooper and the follow up was the Renault Gordini/Alpine A110

Racecar must be the Ford Mirage and the Porsche 917.

These are based to my own opinion standing next to the track during the old Kyalami 9hr races as a youngster

Never seen a Europa on the track up to 1996 when a privateer came from England to race here. Another car that made a BIG impression handlingwise was the Alfa GT juniors and the Berlinas, although the latter was a bit on the heavy side

There were only three of them and at least one was converted back to GT40 body specs...and also was topless for a bit as it was one of the camera cars for the movie Le Mans.

I heard that the 917 was a beast to drive so I thought this inferred poor handling.

Any pix, i had a Scalelectric car once but it was stolen.
This car once kept the South African land speed record when they drove it down from Kyalami to Killarney in Cape Town. Was not for long though......

Did it handle poorly, i thought it was the power and the speed that made it awkward, and apparently the drivers position

The oldest car I've driven is a Mk II Polo GT and not fast enough to judge on the handling...

    From UCP's 917 article:

What was feared from the outset came through, the Porsche 917 didn't work as well on the racing track as it looked to work on the drawing boards. For some reason the handling was terrible and many thought the 580 bhp engine was too much for the lightweight frame.
The 917K and 917LH probably addressed some of these issues (someone else would need to attest to this) but I never thought that this car was really a good handler.

I see the Elan nominated, a good choice, another good one I'd imagine would be a 250 GTO? Maybe not the best but probably pretty damn good.

What about Jaguar E Type? And I'm thinking definitely Lotus's.

Etype was not a great handling car. The front end was too heavy. Factory Porsche drivers preferred the 908 to the 917 and the 906-910 over both of them. The 250 GTO was good but there were better models.

Best handling? A tie between a '69 and '76 Cadillac!
