The ones you're listing were pretty much rally homologation specials.
Make enough to get into the GroupA.
Especially the likes of the Chevette HS2300. It was bitch in traffic with a clutch MADE for rally-line starts and not for pressing regularly in town
But I come back to what I was saying ... the GTi name was for a fast, light, responsive variant. NOW, it's only a title to a lardy, not very fast, not light, barely responsive car with a high price premium For the office managers girlfriend and not the lads in the office
Look around, back in the 70s every "fast lad" wanted and if had the moeny OWNED a GTi.
Now it's the bankers who've not managed to get the big bonusses
Shame, they needed to NOT use the GTi name for these ones.
THe other cars didn't re-use classic titles to sell the cars, isntead came up with "new".
( until that was Renault decided to revive the Gordini name ? )

    Abarth?

EDIT And GTA, altough that engine... it was quite glorious.

EDIT 2 I've driven a Mk II 16v GTi, and it was great but nowhere near as hard as the supercharged Cooper S.

This is well off topic, but I have been spotting 164s around here for a while. I looked for any for sale online in Ontario and Canada on Autotrader and eBay respectively, but sadly found nothing. I want to see how much they are in Canada.

I found a few in the States, a total of 7 on Autotrader - none on eBay. These things appear to be rare as hell. Price ranged from a few grand to over 7k which seems ludicrous.

    Alfa 164?
Over here from 1.000 to 4.000 € on ebay and other sites, depending on year and restyling.
When new, at the end of its life, it was available with good options and all for about 27.000 €.
We used to have one. Best car my father bought to date. 420.000 awesome km.

Ahh...serious consideration now to get this car to replace my 1998 Camry that I've been driving around since end of high school....For a new car at less than $25K in US(and ones that I can get supplier discounts for, thats kinda sporty and practical) its hard to find something that compares to it(Our discount applies to GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, VW(non-TDI), Audi, Mitsubishi)....

Hard to believe that I am looking at a VW but the deal seems pretty good...

They're good, I have two friends with them.. one a Mk V (US auto) and one a Mk VI (AU DSG). They're both real happy with them.
Life's too short to drive bad cars.

Not looking to own a 300+ bhp RWD coupe at this stage of the game....although it is very tempting....

And Mustang is one of those cars that if I were ever to own one it'll probably be a V8....

True, as a V8 it is much more desirable. But, now that the V6 is decent it even makes sense to go for it.

Out of those, and I guess the Camaro and Challenger are out too for the same reasons, the GTI is a very good choice.

I personally like the new 300 a lot as well.

Subaru would be a good choice, but you probably don't get discounts.

Of those the VW looks good. Nothing from Mitsubishi is really desirable except if you want a Evolution. Same to GM, Ford and especially Chrysler.

Nissan's pretty boring. Maybe an Altima?

Subaru is a bit out of my range, and again the issue was like if I were to get a WRX now, I'll always know that there is that STI there...

At any rate, I just put the deposit down for a GTI today....
