Henk, your shots always look a bit grainy and whitish.
Maybe something related to the conversion from raw to jpg?

Oh well, I guess I'm in, glad it's all over (I had asked Pat through a PM to exclude me from the voting thread).

I have always asked myself the same question, your suggestion is certainly incorrect as I shoot in JPEG...but maybe using irfanview to reduce the size of the shot to competition dimensions takes away a lot. Sometimes somebody else resizes the shot for me using Photoshop and at least then the size is a lot bigger than when using other programs. As I have no photoshop license, I cannot do it myself. In this case I was in a hurry when I uploaded the picture and did nothing at all to it, just resizing.

Do you always shot in JPEG?

The resizing process could be the reason then.
I usually use GIMP (it's an open source photoshop basically), but even a simple and small program like GoodFrame (this is free too) does it perfectly, allowing to reduce both size and dimensions in a snap without loosing too much quality. You can even add watermarks and other stuff, or batch processing a whole folder.

Yes, and I'll have a look at the other options you gave.

Yeah, I always wondered why the quality of his photos in the competitions are worse than the ones in the articles he writes.

we discovered the problem, when using "paint" to put the watermark on, the (technical) quality of the shot greatly deteriorates.

The program says "Paint" it comes with MS-Office or XP (I really don't know). I am from the film generation, working with computers is not my favourite job, let alone sorting out all these fancy programmes that serve to mask the deficiencies of a particular shot

I think it's fair to argue there was an art in developing film and that is analogous to post processing via computer today.

Frankly, I find shots look better processed so I'd rather see them anyways.
