After all the anticipation it turns out the car is... no good. Parents called up the Porsche Owners Club to have someone look at it. Apparently after a few hours scrutinizing it was determined that the clutch and gearbox were on their last straw.

I feel really bad now because my mother was very excited to go joy riding in this.

Also, it turns out that the owners of the car knew all about the car's grey history, they just 'forgot' to bring any of it up. No wonder the collector turned it down; the owners made the reason out to be the small tear in the leather seat.

With the coming of the bad news my parents have now decided to be on the lookout for Porsche models for sale. My mother really wants one now.

Thank you all for giving your input and advice. I was able to reference UCP to my mother when she was in the midst of pursuing her hopeful new car. I'll post back when she finds her 911.

eh, you rarely end up with the first car you come across with classics like these. the one for you is usually involves a bit of a search. and $600 worth of inspections across 5 cars lol.

I fear you have missed some points here....

LTSmash, I hope your mother finds a car she loves to drive.

It's a shame that one was NFG, but it's a good idea to look at many examples of any car before making a decision. Granted, the 912E is fairly rare, so there won't be many around. If the 912E is what she has her heart set on, here's one that looks pretty honest: TheSamba.com :: VW Classifieds - 1976 Porsche 912E Coupe

I noticed it's also on eBay. Unusual color, too.

Alternatively, mid '80s 911SC's are plentiful, great value and nearly bulletproof.
Even with a reputable seller, have the car inspected by a 3rd party before purchase.

Good luck on the search, hope she finds her dream car.

The first thing I'd do is change the exhausts...

Here's the latest price guide from Excellence magazine. Some numbers are a little high, and on early models a little low, but gives a good idea for most years. More accurate than KBB.

i didn't realise they actually looked like that (i had the image of the older model in my head haha) - with that being the case, i think finding an SC might work out a lot better since they look pretty similar.

Agreed, clutch... by 1976 US versions had short hoods plus impact bumpers and looked the same for the next 10 years. And as you know the SC is a terrific car. Good '85s (best year IMHO) can be had for used Toyota money, $12-15K.
