culver, how can you not like old BMs? I did have an E36 and they have aged well, but old BMWs have those classic 80s hard lines.

I didn't say I didn't like them though I really don't see anything special about the looks of their cars from the late 70s and early 80s. They aren't ugly cars by any means but it takes a whole other level for me to consider the car "best looking". I like the E36. It's no BS styling really appeals to me. I just don't see it as gorgeous like a Jag Mk2 or the last of the long lived Jag XJ sedans.

Nope. It looks like a failed Alfa. The years where the nose of BMW's looked like the forward sloped windscreen of a Boeing 247 just never did it for me. They may have been great driving cars but I don't like the styling inside or out.

I have to agree. Old BMWs have presence and charisma, but they aren't truly beautiful. At least not in the way a Jaguar, a Bentley, a Lancia or a Maserati could be.

For me, it's the X308 (1997-2003) Jaguar XJR. Since 1968 the XJ has always been an iconic shape that just evolved over the years like a 911 but there's something about the X308 XJR that was just perfect. Not a line on that saloon could be improved which is why the rear of the X350 just didn't work and I can't even acknowledge the X351 at this point.

On the other hand, a vast majority of people found the XJ dated, and the X351 hasagain kickstarted interest in the model, though I would say it looks too similar to a XF from the front to be truly distinctive

The problem with Jaguar is that to break with tradition they've had to go mainstream. The are not bad looking cars, just don't look very Jaguarish. This is especially true with the XF.

+1 on that. Interesting that the very beginning of when automobiles were beginning to be styled rather than simply designed could also be the apogee.

However, for me, nothing quite compares to the '49 Mercury. 2- or 4-door, this was a solid-looking car.
