its hard to think back to the days of the original focus now. a car that took an age-old and worn-out model (escort) and renewed in almost every way with what has to have been the best hatchback of the last 12 years. Design wise, both looks and mechanically it was a car that never really needed to be changed. But they did, and they've over styled it ever since. Its become more and more german, and its faded away into the abyss that is the the hatchback market. It no longer stands out. It no longer has any individuality. Its big bulky and ugly. Everything that the ford focus is not.

    RIP Focus MKI

I have to say I agree. the Mk I was a class act, such a break up with the car that preceed it. The Mk II while good, it wasn't very interesting but this new one is bad. It looks completely average and that's what could kill it before actually knowing what's it like to drive and own.

    Oh grow up you two.

The MkIII is a fine looking compared to it's contemporaries.

The estate looks good, the hatch not so much.

The problem isn't its contemporaries. The problem is the Mk I, which showed what was possible given enough cojones. By the there were already bland cars in the market, including Ford's own Escort, but Ford was brave enough to launch the Mk I Focus. This Mk III biggest enemies aren't its contemporary rivals, it's the original Mk I Focus.

I bought a Focus Mk1 ST170 back in October. If you ignore the electrical problems, the rattly trim and boot and the slow water leak its has been an awesome experience.

Why? The engines okay, needs a bit of revs to really move. But the steering, amazing! Such good feel and the chassis moves beautifully.

Okay, the ST170 has different suspension and steering set up to the standard car, but I've driven the standard and it still has the same feel if not a bit more vague.

We had a silver Mk I 1.6 5 door. Great family car, I didn't quite liked the looks at first but it grew on me. It was reliable and relatively frugal. Oh and it had a brilliant stereo. Unofrtunately I didn't get to drive it, but by all accounts it was better than the other cars we had.

At least you guys didn't get screwed over with half assed Focus MKIIs.

Heck, we'll never see the RS version, ever. (Besides the grey import one on Jalopnik.)
