BMW M1, anyone? That didn't work in the past. Buyers of italian cars want italian engines. Look at the Alfa Spider V6: the engine was simply not accepted by the public, mainly because it was GM sourced. But to be honest, Alfa is a very hard case when it comes to engines.

Whoever has Alfa simply won't be able to make a business case for it.

Three costumers isn't enough to run a business.

Even if the cars looked like dreams, went like stink, were more reliable than a japanese applicance and cost 3p, no one would buy them anyway.

However, don't worry, Italy doesn't follow the conventional rules. So all their completely and beautifully preposterous works are safe.

That and Alfa's emotionality. VW isn't used to emotional cars; that would totally ruin their cold-and-technical reputation which would lead to less sales. They would have to Audi-ize Alfa to avoid that, and i doubt that VW needs another Audi.

Maybe VW should tack a "Premium" sticker on all Alfas and sell them for 2 times the price. Worked well for Audi and VW.
