Need some help from my euro brethren...

Explain to me why i find myself liking the Fiat 500?

I should hate it. Its slow, its tiny, it has no power. I think the smart car is stupid. I think new mini coopers are lame. I would never be caught dead in pretty much every econobox style car ever made.

Yet i find myself somewhat excited about the Fiat 500. I tell my hippie friends to hold off on the latest japanese deal and get a Fiat 500. I find this car to be attractive while i find its competition to be lame.

It just seems like kind of a fun, quirky, semi stylish car with a lot of personality.

Of course ive never driven one, nor have i seen one in real life. Is it as good looking in real life as it is in pictures? is it a good car? is it fun to drive? am i crazy?

this is why, it's refreshing against a sea of econoboxes.
and yes they look awesome rolling around.

The thing is, it's an Italian car. And italian cars can't be quantified objectively.

Retroness puts me off a bit, but the turbo twin is interesting and the Abarth 500 SS looks like a lot of fun and charisma.
Lack of charisma can be fatal.

    What they said.
Except I'm pretty used to it and I'd prefer an Abarth Punto over an Abarth 500.

I like them but I'd never buy one. Its too cutesy and feminine. Same stigma a miata has. Good car but not very masculine.

"Real men drive Miatas" is probably the next response. That's great and all but it's no secret half of the people who see you driving cars of that sort think your gay or not very 'manly'.

I think you Europeans call them hairdressers cars. Eclipse, Audi TT, Miata, Golf cabrio, etc

Golf Cabrio is not even a car.
    MX-5/Miata is fine.
The 500 is a bit more feminine than a Mini but not as much as say a Lancia Ypsilon or the Skoda Fabia.
    It's kinda unisex.

When I looked the only option was whether you wanted the C or not and what colour. Otherwise it was a single spec level around the 100bhp NA 1.4.

I don't know, I don't find the car attractive at all, no matter how well the Abarth version performs. It's like the VW New Beetle, no matter which way I look at it, I don't like it. The RSi verison though, I wouldn't mind, but that's probably because I like the VW R32.

I never liked the Fiat 500 from the beginning, old or new.

there is an option for the abarth if you ask nicely at the dealer. an acquaintance was ordering one for his wife before they were notified they only came in manual

Excellent point about the italian cars. Maybe thats why i like it so much.

Retroness is not a problem here because we probably haven't had a car that looks like that since, well, ever. And if we did (i know fiat had a presence in the US in the past) it certainly wasn't popular enough for the new car to bring back most peoples memory of the old one.
