For those that still know me I haven't been around much lately. Just couldn't resist to post some shots of my big pride. To celebrate passing the 160.000km's I guess

It helped me drive all the way to school every day for the last year or so. And with great fun, it did! The unreliable, expensive to maintain, heavy-drinking monster, nope, not talking about it's driver, but about my Ford Puma 1.7 16V.

Just like it's owner, it is doing better than ever. It has had basically everything attached to the suspension replaced. Brakes, axles, springs and dampers (gotta love those custom-made Koni's). The engine is still original, except tweaking it's ECU a little bit. 135 hp with 1000kg. Great fun still.

PS: I am gonna try and be a bit more active here again now I got my life back on the rails.

I'm not familiar with the Puma, as that must be a european model, yet it looks like nothing America. Do you have any idea what its American equivalent might be?

The Mercury Cougar (sold in Europe as a Ford) was this car's bigger brother which is why the Cougar looks like a 150% version of the Puma. IIRC the Puma was built on a Fiesta platform.

We got the Cougar, but I think I've seen a couple of these around.. I don't think they ever sold them here though. There was the Laser Lynx though...

different shape entirely to the puma , but they may be related floorpan/chassie wise . i couldnt say if they were

The only thing in America that might come near is a version of the Fiesta. Maybe the Fiesta ST or something ?

Same over here. There's still 1700-ish Puma in the country here of which about 800 1.7's. A real shame as that engine is awesome

True. It is easy to fix though. A lot of the problems can be solved with creativity. For example the shaking door panels are attached rock-solid now on mine using bolts and clips from a Renault Megane Coupé The parcel tray falling off is still annoying but can be sort of solved with drilling a new hole and putting in longer bolts. Suspension parts are mostly from a Fiesta (or Escort!) so good to come by. The more unique parts for the engine for example are a bugger to find though. For example a tensioner for the timing belt cost me €380 !!

The Lynx Laser looks like a modified Mazda 323. The Fiesta (on which the Puma is based) shares the platform of the Mazda 121, so i dont think they are related in anyway.


I also added some more pictures. These three are the ones put on the 'net by the seller a long time ago..

I still have a kind of to-do-list for my ride:
- Get proper audio
- Fix rust on rear wheel arches (tiny bubble but it means cutting it out and replacing both inner and outer panels, welding new, painting etcetera..)
- Install my Sparco seat + belts
- Play even more with the ECU and on our dyno
- Brake upgrade
- Start racing

A friend wanted to buy a V6 but stepped away from it in the last second because somebody told him that the Cougar was horrendously unreliable. And because the spare parts cost a million Euros.

We still have lots of them around here because there are always some young folks which want to drive a coupe but don't have enough money to afford a BMW or a Merc. And because there aren't that many jap coupes around, Ford coupes (which don't cost that many, even in good condition) are nearly the only choice .

Drakkie, your Puma looks very nice. I don't see one of these in such a good condition very often. You must truely love that car .

We were also looking at the Cougar, but we decided against it because it was too big, too thirsty and tow expensive.

By the way, drakkie, our door panels also fell off. After 3 years and 50.000km.
