I actually think last year they were just lucky. Virgin did some poor mistakes in the design process, costing them 4 or 5 races, and their reliability was really bad.
Checking last year's standings, HRT managed to arrive 14th exactly in the few races where Virgin retired or performed poorly. They were also lucky as in Monaco they retired a few laps from the end, so still qualified.
Otherwise Virgin finished the race in a better position than HRT 13 times, only 5 times it was the other way around.
What they did managed to do was bringing the cars at the checkered flag 23 times VS 21 times for Virgin, but that was considering accidents as well.
Didn't check it, but it seems like Lotus and Virgin suffered more failures from the Coswaorth engine and gearbox too.
I'm also not sure how much they could've learned about last year's car, otherwise they could have at least attempted to do something rather than just show off the whole autumn and winter about a new car that basically has yet to be seen, let alone the financial resources they said it was already secured.
