Also, ISPs hosting servers look at outbound traffic rates. They may cap a site if it exceeds their limits. Lots of big avatars are using outbound traffic capacity. So lots of them means less traffic for the REAL stuff before you get capped.
I think UCP has a good compromise. Some other forum have big avatars, lots of complicated and flashing signaures with pics and one line of text on a single page !!

oh, i forgot about the people without braodband. That's ok, i like my avatar size now, just wondering why it had a limit to its size.

at first i thought is was a slight pain, but once i was able to chop down my pic just right, i became happy again

i think you can get larger pics when you have a paid subscription(read it somewhere) for 2,50$ a month
