You know what they say about payback. Either way, if regulations don't decide, the market will.

No. It's pure capitalism at work, and the Chinese are very astute capitalists.

Edward, it would be helpful to identify models with their manufacturer. How many new makes have appeared in the past 10 years?
Just a few new ones in the past 10 years, I think!
But, the life of them is not long!
    For example,
Aux - a SUV. Just about 4000 in total production.
It was a air condition maker!

Das Auto - translate into Chinese, means "Car of the Road, Only VW".
But in the pronunciation of "Das Auto" in Chinese, it means "Kill the Alto" - Hee-Hee!

Of course there were once, but neither Hyundai and Kia no longer need to copy.

There is a car dealership which has Great Wall vehicles in Adelaide, Australia. You often see television commercials advertising Great Wall pick-ups.

I've seen some GW pickups in Italy.
I didn't like the design, to be honest. Not a copy, but not nice to look at.
Some Chinese car makers are actually making nicely designed cars, but they are not the majority. Also, I tend to get lost in their illogical alphanumeric naming system.

MG6 sold not very well in China, less than Roewe 55o and Roewe 35o.
Another expected car of MG is 5

Edward, how much did the MG6 sell for... were there competitors priced more attractively? Or did it not appeal to the target market?
