1982 VW rabbit with 1984 engine?

I have a 1982 VW rabbit with an 1984 vw GTI engine. Its a 1.8L engine, but it has carbs. Now is that not original? Or did they switch from Fuel Injection to carbs. I have the vin number handy, as the car is set-up for racing.

    thanks

Not a "knock off", just a swap that then got carbs. What happened to the 356?

O gotcha, the 356 is sitting in the garage, slowly being worked on. Theres more work to do on the 356 then the rabbit.
I got the rabbit for 6 grand, racing prepared.. still minor things on that. But not as much as the 356
