Exhaust blown diffusers are back and Karun Chandhok will take Jarno Trulli's place in the Team Lotus car. The team is nevertheless adamant that it wants to continue with Trulli and have apparently opened contract negotiations. He blames his difficult season on the lack of feel from the power steering system. Practice starts in 90 minutes.

Interesting race. That EVERYONE hoped for rain and stayed on the soft compound was surprising in a way. Would be curious to see time lost on primes calculated over the multiple stops everyone had to make to comply with tire regs... if any of the top 10 run a one stop race would it have made a difference in the outcome?

It was a good race, nice and close up front and a bunch of passing.. and not too much crashing! Buemi's coming together with Heidfeld coulda been much worse than it was, good thing it was just gravel trap there.
As for tyres, I imagine with the same tyres and no regulation to use the both most teams would have still done what they did, only without the last stop or the last stint would have been on the softs. The comments from the BBC guys were that the softs were worth as many as 1.5 seconds a lap over the mediums, and given the close racing they still would've been burning them out pretty quick either way.

And yet when the changed from soft to medium tyres, the top drivers at least, they started going faster. So maybe the medium tyres weren't as slow as they thought.

What they compared were two new sets of tyres. By the time the front runners put on the mediums, the soft ones were probably worn away considerably and perhaps as much as 1.5 seconds slower compared to a fresh set. This wear is of course masked by the ever emptier fuel tank.

True, still perhaps the difference wasn't that great and staying out with soft worn tyres worse than pitting for fresh medium ones.

The point is that if they had their choice they'd've pitted the same amount of times, but they'd've put soft ones on again at the end. The timing differences speculated were from the practice and quali sessions.

Not to mention the fact that at that point of the race the track is the most "rubber in". Fact is if they had stayed on old soft for longer they probably would've lost more time.
Pretty exciting race, which had tension throughout, with position being changed in pitlane and on the track...
