Each year the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance celebrates several marques and/or themes. In 2010, Pierce-Arrow was the featured marque and in addition, Alfa Romeo's centenary was celebrated. To warm you up even further for the upcoming Monterey Classic Car Week, today we highlight a machine from each of these great marques that starred at Pebble last year.
Unquestionably the most famous of all Pierce-Arrows is the Silver Arrow show car that was introduced in 1933. Its styling was well ahead of its time and the Pierce-Arrow marketing people justifiably claimed the Silver Arrow offered 1940 in 1933. The young designer Phil Wright was responsible for the aerodynamic lines. He had only joined a few months before the influential machine was launched. Ironically, Pierce-Arrow reached this artistic peak when the company was in dire straits. In the end only five Silver Arrows were built although the name was used for later, more conventional production models. The Silver Arrow that was displayed at Pebble is one of three or four that have survived.
The Alfa Romeo centenary was celebrated with a special class for 8C (eight cylinder) model. One of the rarest of these was the 8C 2900A, which was originally built for competition purposes only. After two seasons of racing with back-to-back Mille Miglia victories, the surviving examples were offered for sale. To make it more appealing, this 8C 2900A was re-bodied with a more luxurious 'Spider' body. Unusually, this was done in-house instead of by specialist companies like Touring or Pinin Farina. Today the unique 8C is owned by 8C expert Simon Moore. It was not only shown on the 18th fairway at Pebble but also driven during the Tour d'Elegance. Our 12-shot gallery shows the car at both occasions.
