SAAB files for bankruptcy protection :(

It's probably a good thing... maybe some actual financial restructuring can be done. Although, each time this comes up in the news, hope fades a little more...

A sad truth from the article:
"The brand is tarnished, and the company doesn't own any of its own technology - all the cars are based on GM Opels”

I'm not a financial litigation expert, but they should file for protection on their protection.

So with no new cars they can't get enough revenue and profits, and with no revenue and profits they can't develop new cars.

    That's a dead end...

Even though it has been looking pretty bleak, this is sad news. The fact that GM stripped the company of it's technical identity pretty much seals their fate. Without SAAB-ness no reoganization would matter.

I've never owned one, but have a powerful urge to buy an old 93 or maybe a 95... every orphan needs a home. Great cars.

We had a 9-5 when they were first released. Had to let it go recently because we couldn't afford to upkeep it. But they really are extremely special cars, and it certainly was better than the equivalent Mercedes/BMW/Audi at the time in terms of comfort, safety, and styling.

People will disagree, but they're wrong. Sure, the mechanical side isn't German, but everything else far surpasses it's German rivals.

The current 9-5 is one of the most beautiful cars out there right now, but because of all this happening, nobody will be tempted to buy one. It really is extremely sad.

Well, the mechanicals are basically Opel, right? So they're German, but they're not German.

    Diesels are from Italy, though.

Guaranteed to break down the moment you leave the dealer.

    They're supposed to be Swedish.

Apparently, the current 9-3 is quite different from the Vectra it's been derived from. In fact it's so different it can't be built on the same production lines as the Opel. But nobody can actually notice the difference.

So you end up with a car which feels like an Opel, but it costs like a BMW to built. And that was badged as a Saab.

    Certainly a recipe for success!

The Swedish courts have denied the request for the protection.

    Expect the end within days.

Local papers here in Sweden are speculating that the Chinese are waiting for bankruptcy so they can buy Saab for dirt cheap :|

"Saab confirmed in a statement this morning that Youngman has issued the first payment, reportedly around $15 million, of a $97 million bridge loan that will help keep the Swedish automaker solvent during its reorganization while it waits for both Chinese and Swedish authorities to approve a much larger investment of about 245 million Euro by Youngman and fellow Chinese carmaker Pang Da. Saab expects it will have the full $97 million loan in hand by October 22."
