RIP Gianpiero Moretti founder of Momo

    Quite a storied history.

Veteran gentleman racer and motorsport industry giant Gianpiero Moretti passed away Saturday at the age of 67.

Moretti, the founder of the Italian automotive equipment company, MOMO, was an accomplished driver in his own right, making four starts in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in a racing career that lasted nearly 40 years.

The Italian's biggest achievement, however, came in the 1998 Rolex 24 at Daytona, when Moretti and co-drivers Didier Theys, Mauro Baldi and Arie Luyendyk took their MOMO-sponsored Ferrari 333 SP to the overall victory.

Ironically, the MOMO colors will return to Daytona later this month displayed on NGT Motorsport’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. The brand, which stands of the first two letters of Moretti-Monza, was founded in the 1960s and continues to be one of the iconic names in the automotive and motorsports world.
