2013 European Car of the Year

The 2013 European Car of the Year is...

    The Volkswagen Golf.

Hardly suprising, but not a bad winner.

    The full results are below

    VW Golf 414
    Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ 202
    Volvo V40 189
    Ford B-Max 148
    Mercedes A Class 138
    Renault Clio 128
    Peugeot 208 120
    Hyundai i30 111

I have to say, I would've voted the Toyobaru.

It shouldn't win. And precisely for that it should.

    Or something.

Feel free to voice your thoughts, including pointing out how boring the Golf is, that A-Class is Daimler bottling it out or that all Korean cars are crap and all our usual claptrap.

    Over to you chaps.

I think the Golf is a good car, always has been and always will be, but no one goes "OH THE NEW GOLF CAME OUT, LETS RUSH TO THE MAGAZINE STANDS AND READ ABOUT IT." Its hardly exciting or extraordinary in anyway. For lack of a better word, it is "standard." So I will vote for the Toyobaru, because that is the only car on that list that I think is different from the rest, and in a good way.

Is the Golf even best in the segment, or just the default choice due to VW hegemony? A very uninspired choice.

    I fell asleep.

Well it is the best. The best... product that is.

I think the Golf is a deserving winner. In terms of engineering, product and also from the business point of view. The new platform is very clever, it's lighter, it has some intelligent technology (CoD). And it's a Golf so it won't depreciate, so it even makes sense to buy one.

So it's the Nissan GT-R of family hatchbacks.

    Probably.

I'm with Sniff. Far too sensible and well made a car to win. The clear winner should've been that Russian Limo that Putin doesn't like.

    That limo.

    It's lovely.

It's not that different from a Mulsanne with loose engineering tolerances and Russian standards. If it was a Bentley it would sell by the million.

    Probably.

I'm sure there's some app for that.

Obvious choice is obvious....Golf also represent the proper launch of the VW's new world domination platform in MQB that'll pin pretty much all the VW from this point on(although its not the first MQB car that was launched, I believe that was either the Leon or the A3)

COTY are always going to pick cars like this anyway.

Not really.. there are a bunch of examples where they picked something ludicrously terrible.
