I guess I like GTIs and R32s of MkIV vintage. But our 2L City ("Shitty," as one has dubbed it) Golf is an utter pile of crap. A steamy turd.
Yeah, that Beetle had more than its share of problems. The Passat we also had at the same time was rock solid though. From what I have gathered, a lot of the VW's assembled in Mexico and sold up here are very hit-or-miss, either perfectly reliable, or a total lemon.

It is crap in many more ways than it's pathetic unreliability though.
I did drive a Beetle in driving school which had the 2-litre...that was a pretty craptacular motor. The diesel and 1.8t were much superior. My Mom's Beetle had the latter. In between trying to trace what happened to vacuum hoses which twice seemed to disappear, it ran pretty well.

The handling was uninteresting but after several weeks of turbo lag the 150bhp GTI TDI version really shifted.
Well, at least the interior was well put together.
