2014 Australian Grand Prix (Mar 14-16)

On the back of the most the substantial rule changes in years, the Formula 1 season has kicked off in Australia this morning with the first practice. Reliability is a major concern for all teams and some suggest none of the cars will make to the finish on Sunday. Defending champions Red Bull, for example, have only completed 17 consecutive laps without issues in pre-season testing.

If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

After a difficult start to Practice, Hamilton topped Practice 2, while Grosjean and Kobayashi are clearly in trouble:

Hamilton confirmed the pace of the Mercedes by placing it on pole, while Ricciardo impressed by out-qualifying Vettel by quite a margin. Lotus on the other hand had a dismal afternoon, failing to get a decent lap in.

Just seen the qualy, and for the first time heard the new engines.

    They sound ridiculous.

Oh yeah bud. Bernie was right about the sound being an issue. Wow are they terrible.

I want me some late 90s screaming V10 action, as incongruous as that is with the current state of affairs.

I'm pretty far from a tifoso, but am I the only one who thinks it's a shame that Ferrari willingly dropped a pair of cylinders from their twelve before the rules compelled them to do so?

I agree about this year's cars; it is interesting because the '80s turboes had a nice, if not as mind-piercing as the screamers, sound.

EDIT: Poor Ricciardo. It almost seems as if a pattern is developing with Australian Red Bull drivers...

It was indeed a shame - and I do not like Ferrari at all.

In fact I do not understand why is there the need to fix the engine layout. I would say that in that aspect endurance racing is far more interesting.

I was also pleased with Bottas' performance, if only because it meant we got to see Martini's beautiful colours on the telly a lot more.

The racing was interesting, the cars clearly has a bit more of a rough edge to it, they seems a lot less consistent in the way that the gaps grows and shrinks. The sound is definitely not as interesting as before. You do hear more of what else is going on though...I don't remember hearing tire squeal as much when they pull away from the pit stall...lol

For me it was the most interesting F1 has been in ages. The new rules make it so as well as another competitive Aussie. I am reinvigorated for F1.
