Anglo-Canadian auctioneer RM Sotheby's recently announced a pair of 1950s as early headlines for their upcoming Monterey and Villa Erba auctions. For the former, an early consignment is a great example of the Maserati A6GCS/53. This was the Italian manufacturer's two-litre sports racer of the early 1950s that was campaigned by both the factory racing team and numerous customers. It was so successful and popular that Maserati ended up building over 50 cars. The consigned example was a works car, raced throughout the 1954 season with great success by Luigi Musso. It is offered from a two-decade ownership and has recently benefited from a complete restoration. It is estimated to sell for well over $3 million.
At next month's Villa Erba sale, one of the highlights already announced is this Porsche 550A RS Spyder. The 15th example built, this car was sold to a Danish entrant, who fielded the car in numerous events during the 1957 and 1958 season. It was later also owned and raced in Africa. Freshly restored, chassis 0121 has a pre-sale estimate of Euro 3.4-3.8 million.
