    Carlos Ghosn Trials

Has anyone been following the downfall of Carlos Ghosn? Back then he seemed like the next greatest thing for Nissan and now he's chilling in Lebanon.

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

I have followed all along. It's complex it seems. Ghosn probably did some bad stuff. The Japanese justice system is not coming out looking good.

And it seems there may have been political interference.

    Here is a short TL;DR.

I was surprised at how relatively draconian the justice system in Japan is, for a developed country. Not being able to speak with your lawyer or wife for long periods of time. In any case, he gon'. He won't be headed back.

I heard, Japan is a weird country sometimes. It's a country renowned for efficiency but a crushing bureaucracy. For those who want a video, a segment from PBS Newshour.

    It isn't really efficient anymore.

People work extremely long hours and have jobs for life, but the productivity isn't great. The work culture is more work = better status = promotion. Not better output. So folks work stupid long hours and it doesn't add anything. See what Microsoft's trial did.

The problem is it's an uphill struggle against culture and social norms.

An aging workforce, consistent very low inflation, and low growth. Secular stagnation. Big issues they face.

Didn't read anything and I haven't followed it but maybe Renault try to take over Nissan didnĄt go so well...

(As well as perhaps Ghosn not being perfectly clean...)
Lack of charisma can be fatal.

It's all politics. I bet you if Carlos Ghosn was a pure blood Japanese we wouldn't be hearing any of this happen.

Off topic, but speaking of takeovers, I wonder what happened with the specifics on the Porsche/VW merger when Porsche tried to take over VW and the opposite happened.

He actually has the balls to show up to an interview after leaving Japan. Kudos to him I guess. The story definitely is interesting and I'd imagine deeply embarrassing for the Japanese Customs and Immigrations office.
