In an online-only reveal, BMW took the wraps of the all-new 4-Series. Boasting distinct design cues, it is no longer just a 3-Series with two doors removed. The most obvious change are the prominent BMW 'kidneys' in the front grille. They are inspired by classic models from the 1930s and 1950s and will certainly be a subject of debate. While an M4 will be launched in due course, the current range topping model is the M440i xDrive. This is powered by a 369bhp 3-litre engine that is mated to a mild hybrid system.
A clear inspiration is the 328 of the 1930s of which this 328 MM Touring Berlinetta is quite possibly the most famous. This was a one-off built by Touring with a slippery coupe body. It won its class at Le Mans and also won the final pre-War edition of the Mille Miglia, which featured a shortened course. After many years in private hands, the 328 MM is once again owned by BMW and regularly shown at a variety of events.
One of the actual predecessors of the current 4-Series is the two-door E21 3-Series, which formed the basis for a wild and very wide competition car. Powered by a two-litre engine, it was raced in Group 5 guise in the World Championship and the DRM series. The featured example was a customer car and raced by its first owner in the DRM series.
