Results from the Monterey auctions with four of the top sellers ...
The results are in for last week's Monterey auctions and all three international auctioneers saw strong sales. The top seller of the weekend was the virtually brand-new McLaren F1, which was offered by Gooding & Co. during the official Pebble Beach auction. It found a new owner for just under $20.5 million, which helped the California-based auctioneer exceed $107 million over the two-day sale. Another impressive sale was this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster that ticked all the boxes and exceeded the top estimate at $3.1 million.
Anglo-Canadian rival RM Sotheby's spread their auction over three days and grossed nearly $150 million with a 91% sell-through rate. One of our favourite cars in the sale was this Ferrari 268 SP, which changed hands for $7.7 million, making it the second most expensive car in the sale after this Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.
The single-day Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction saw $36 million worth of machinery change hands with a 89% sell-through rate. The striking Mercedes Benz 680 S Sports Tourer that was owned by the same family for nearly 60 years topped the Bonhams charts. For the literally once-of-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the, the new custodian had to pay nearly $5.4 million.
