Wierd, coz I thought the big American cars are slumping in competition against the more fuel-efficient Asian cars. In Australia Nissan have just discontinued the high selling Nissan Pulsar (small sedan and hatch-same as UKs Almera) and brought in a new, crappy copy of a Peugeot/Renault, Nissan Tiida. The sales disaster has been dispite its efficiency and space.
There are only two possible explanations: either no one told me, or no one knows.

    This isnt the 1980s anymore.
The main reason an American car would be slumping in fuel consusmtion would be due to either a 4 speed auto only offered (opposed to a 5 speed auto or manual) or for using a V6 opposed to a 4 cylinder in comparison.

    ^^^^ Half problem solved already.
My joke had no intention to be insulting. It's just a joke with a fact: a big part of US citizens have a weight problem. I don't think that's offensive, but my sincere appologies if you think it is.

Anyway, what's for you an acceptable fuel consumption? Because there are still plenty of new american cars with a comsumption considered unnaceptable by european patterns.

and in your post preceding THAT one you actually proved WHY it should remain
You corrected Brum's misconception on modern consumption.
Seems like it has value and you are confused if it should be open or not.

I didnt take offence, but thanks for being apologetic. Im just tired of all the American bashing the Europeans do.

Again those that dont get fuel consumption to European standard are usually not equiped(as in transmission, and engine) like the cars its being compared to. Its going to be very close if you compare an American 4 clyinder(petrol) with a 5 speed to a european or japanese 4 cylinder(petrol) with a 5 speed in the same class. That means dont compare a V6 GrandAm with its 4 speed auto to a small 4 clyinder european car with a stick.
