    Holden pinged with SV6 ad

    Safety campaigners ping Holden ad

    By Joshua Dowling Motoring Editor
    Monday September 6 2004

Holden is under fire again from child safety advocates for a racy TV commercial, but it would appear it does not breach the car industry's advertising code of conduct.

The ad, first aired during the Olympics, depicts a father showing off his new Commodore while his son sits in a child restraint in the back. As the car accelerates quickly, the man and the boy grin as the engine sounds like it is approaching maximum revs.

"It's irresponsible," said Danny Cass, a pediatric trauma surgeon at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. "Who on earth could think it's appropriate to have little kids think it's fun when dad is revving the engine and accelerating aggressively? [The ad] sends the wrong message to young parents."

Holden's spokesman, Jason Laird, said: "A kid smiling doesn't make for a traffic fine. The car is not speeding. We have adhered to the code of conduct and we're disappointed that some people have applied their own perspective to the ad. It's a father and his young son on a country road enjoying the experience. The last time I checked ... that was not illegal."

Dr Cass said Holden was not alone in glorifying speed in advertising, and he and other safety advocates believe the car industry's self-imposed code is being flaunted. Mitsubishi was recently criticised for an ad with three high-powered sedans racing on a dirt road. The ad was withdrawn, but re-appeared with a disclaimer.

The Pedestrian Council of Australia said the Holden ad showed that the code was a farce. "This is a perfect example of subliminal effects being used to get around the code," said the council's chairman, Harold Scruby. "The car is shown being driven legally but they've overlayed a soundtrack of a vehicle being driven fast."

Mr Scruby said the code and the Advertising Standards Bureau's complaints process needed to be reviewed. "It takes four to six weeks for a complaint to be processed. By then the ad has run its course, so car makers don't care if the ad is taken off air. It's a farce.

"We need to stop ads like this getting to air ... I would rather see voluntary enforcement, but if this continues we will push for car ads to be vetted by an independent road safety panel."

I understand the need to put forward a responsible message but who believes that people go out and emulate what they see in ads. Bare in mind no P platers buying this thing, maybe drive dads, but if they are going to drive fast it is going to happen anyway. Its another example of society reliquishing its responsibilty for its own actions and laying the blame on someone else. Conduct defensive driving courses for new drivers or shut up.

its getting ridiculous really, i'd be interested to see if there were any coplaints made about Ford's Falcon SR and Classic ad's, to me them and the SV6 ad have about the same amount of misleading footage, none.

misleading footage is one thing, giving the general public more credit than they currently get is another. I fail to find anyone who really believes that the Falcon SR, let alone the SV6 ad, are real!

Another case of the government catering to the Lowest Common Denominator..

well until now, the only thing people have been talking about is how fake the engine sounds in the SV6 ad, saying its a taping of the engine indifferent conditions etc, some even saying it sounds more like a V8 than what the Gen3 does, but it seems not everyone ecognises it that way

Wousers......I see where there comming from from a saftey aspect....but really there is such a thing as too much....and with out television programming i enjoyed my father revving his grey studebaker....and as i found out when i drove it sound is deceving the home made exaust sounds great at full throttle and pretty convining at even 40mph on its speedo....

And thats telly for you fpv the xr8 add they done the same thing and in holdens thunderstruck ute add the car only kicked up a few rooster tails....isnt it amazing what they can do with mirrors

And market reaserch proves that fast cars and sex sells...sodeception works just as well...but now even the wousers are spoiling everything...they even puta stop to 2 teens haveing a pash in a chicken nugget add.....probly the same kind of wousers that are stopping the roo culling and letting them bounce all over the nations capital.....i wouldent be upset if i didnt have a few instances of late that gave me a few premature grey hairs

Well ive had my peace on this here i would of made a cameo appreance earlier but it the page woudlent load for me yesterday

That ad had some substance at least, Mitsubishi had a good idea for pointing out the benefits of AWD as far as handling goes. Perhaps they would've been better off showing images of the Magna VR-X AWD that took part in the Rally of Canberra.

Holden thunderstruck ad was Real, In some ways, They really got a car out there and did that, Then AD some bits here and there get the rain black clouds make like it makes a storm you got one out there AD that we don't belive could ever happen cause we smarter then that,
But this SV6 AD DAM!, Can't these people carry on, The message i get from it is this, A Dad and Son smiling happy together priceless I have seen far more worse ad's on TV then some of the car ad's over the years, And the magna AD lol What i seen from that was Commodore SS and XR8 Getting a Free AD lol

The AD's that are bad for kids and us are the one's like Pele Who shares with us he has a limp Winky ? Ahhhhh we don't need to know that. Or the female AD about the Vagina Explain the birds and the bees to the kids after seeing that AD.
Worse AD on TV is that little shet that sprays the exploding bottle of drink all over his mum, Then she sprays water on him and they have a water fight in the house That's a bad message
It's not up to them to tell us what we should do and watch, That's our decision, We teach our kids the rights and wrongs not them

Well yeah the car did do that but the dust it kicked up was no bigger then me...ive got a pic in wheels of a behind the scenes pic with mirrors all behindit simply amzing optical illusions at its best.... and its a sound plan you cant be wrecking your press car now can you?

A tad crude but i agree...the wousers ruin everyones fun....

I still cant see why the kid was shakeing the bottle in the first place

Well sadlyit is up to them other wise there still would be the biff in footy and ingalland skaify wouldent of been in shit for their little on track antics....

And theres an idea fpv...prehaps even with a commentry from dunko while the footage was been shown....I would strongly suggest they keep the other mitsu team members away from the camera...they where weird to say the least....

i'd be interested to know how "realistic" the one tonner ad was. of all the ads, i think that would take the cake for computer enhancements in the cinematography

lol... this is just stupid, ive watched all these adds and see nothing wrong with them (the car adds), one thing i find intresting is that it is socialy accaptable to have ppl cruzin not watchin the road etc but a dad and son having a drive is bad cos the car is revving. What if they couldn't get it out of first? then it would just be realistic
