You have heard of the 959 havent you??

    My choices would be.......

    Miura for starting it all
GT40 original for being a world beating badass that has never been equalled in racing
959 for being possibly the most advanced car on the planet whilst also being the first useable supercar
F40 for its outright pursuit of performance
Bugatti EB110 for again being something different from the standard supercar cocktail (and gotta be on the list just cos its got 4 turbos ffs !!)

    And above all the others..........

Macca F1..........sorry, but its genuinely the best as it has all the traits of the cars listed previous.....but in spades. I doubt another road car will ever be made that has such a dedication to going faster by a mile than everything else around, in comfort and safety of the absolute highest level.

There are so many great supercars, its not a easy choice. I cannot think of a car in particular that can beat all the other.
When you remember a supercar that has changed somehow the course of automobil history post a reply. I dunno whats the greatest, so if some one could correctly choose one i will be glad to now what supercar is it.

True. I havn't posted which car deserves this title because it's not just a measure of performance but also of historical significance. Also lineage and derivation is important. So, if I had to choose a modern car... Suppose Bill Gates decides that he is going to build a supercar. He employs the various specialists in the different fields of engine, chassis, suspension tuning to conjure up a 1000 hp machine that can (as a design criteria) easily outdo other supercars. Lets say its secret is a 1500 lb curb weight, moving ballasts and enough computing power for engine and active suspension control worthy of uncle Bill(as he is affectionately known in Washington). The true cost is $4 million but Gates sells them for 3 as a goodwill gesture. Now...would this be the ultimate supercar of all time? Maybe, but it would definitely better the argument for performance dictating ultimate status. Until there is such domination, small if any advantages in performance cannot dethrone the king.

Not that the cars I think are deserving of the title are slugs and we need to character assasinate the competition. It's only to make the point that a car with little pedigree cannot just be considered better than marques that have endured for half a century, based on small advantage in an objective (timed) tests. Better maybe for the people with an affinity for the country of origin, OK that's natural but think beyond that.

Lamboghini deserves a mention because they started the road-going car with stellar performance genre, with the Miura. The Miura wasn't perfect as it wanted to become airborne at 170+ MPH, but imagine that performance many decades ago. Relative superiority was much more than that enjoyed by supercars today. Today, an average FWD Acura RSX type-S can brush 150 MPH and the supercars are just above 200.

The two modern cars that deserve this title with one only slighty ahead of the other are the Enzo and Carrera GT. The Enzo takes top spot. Enzo because its a tribute, a car created to honor perhaps the most respected name in automobiledom. When I was a small child, growing up in Pakistan in the 70s I knew the name Ferrari. Since then I've lived in and visited many countries and speed fans everywhere love Ferrari. Some jeepneys in the Philippines sport the prancing pony, overhear a conversation in a university in Seattle, "...its almost Ferrari-fast...". It has become an icon. Maybe there is a bias but when enough people think one way it becomes the norm. So when Ferrari makes what they say is the best they could make, I consider it the best. Besides, its numbers speak for themselves.

The Carrera GT gets the second spot for many of the same reasons. Maybe if it was called the Ferdinand...it would have some more emotional content but then it wouldn't be itself. Both these cars exemplify their companies and founders dreams, so they are deserving of the title.

IMO...yet if performance alone dictates all else...the next Evo MR, or maybe the one after will be boosted enough to blow the Enzo's semi-gullwings off...

Ferrari F40 and its family (288 GTO, F50, and Enzo). F40 is pure supercars that is built for pure performance and driving sensation.

    Isn't the XJ220 220mph, after the name??

I never really knew much about his car, until I watched top gear and in a straight line it was quicker than Lamborgini and the Zonda

it never made 220mph, independent tests clocked it at 212 and 213. and it sounded weak and was 2.2m wide with poor handling.... and i'd still have one in a flash
edit: of the two XJ220's in australia, one was crashed within 15 minutes of leaving the pier, as it accelerated unexpectedly into someone's rear... the driver obviously now has a fear of turbo lag

    Help me understand supercars

Yesterday I overheard some older guys talking about their Ferraris and new Gallardo. I am curious to understand why these cars are special to everyone. Seriously I am just curious -- no offense intended, you can buy plenty of faster cars (acceleration, braking, autocross or track) starting at $10K. For $60K you can buy a really fast, nice car. Is it the image, the lines, the beautiful interiors, the name, the price or what that appeals to everyone? Last time I asked someone this question, they said it was for attracting girls. Thanks for any answers.

welcome to UCP. If you are familiar with the fairy tale about the emperor and his new clothes, than you are very close to having your answer.

In trying to understand supercars it helps to realize that part of the plan is supercars are meant to be exclusive. If Ferrari made 20,000 Enzos every year the same car wouldn't seem quite that special as some will surely be seen used for delivering Pizza, eventually. So, many times six times the price doesn't always equate to six times the performance.

For me this doesn't devalue supercars. They are fast and sticky on curvy roads but their real appeal is in that they are the best of what a car can be.
