If the Top Speed has been approved by an official source, then yes. If it hasn't, then it's not.

253 was apparentlt achieved at VW's 9 mile long drag strip thing, but as the only people there were VW employees its hardly official.

    finally the correct answer

How is it that people argue about things that can be googled in about 3 seconds? posts like these don't offer any insight they are just easily researchable facts. If anyone who thought that any car besides the Veyron was the fastest didn't take 3 seconds to look it up on a search engine to check.

J, lots of web sites are actually citing the Veyrons imaginary figures first posted months ago and SOME sites are claiming speeds based on wrong conditions. eg C&D is not a recognised record run, it's there own "version".

Except for UCP you should never trust the web

As far as I know magazines count as a recognised run, it's third party and recorded on reliable equipment. These magazines make their living on testing cars, it's their job. And magazines such as Car and Driver, Road & Track, etc, are reliable.

I know there are events set up to solely record runs and times, but when a third party tests a car it's usually noted as legit.

    A couple of issues here:

    1) Its not in production,
    2) There is not a hope it will get to 273m/h without a lot more power.

The info I have found on those figures give that speed as the max with the cars drag and 1000bhp to overcome it.

Unfortunatly there is no power then to overcome rolling resistance or drivetrain losses.......
