    custom car building

    hi guys,
1 day i want to build custom cars but i want to know a bit about the building of the body/chassis.
after you have designed it do you build a base like a gocart then do the suspension ect.
and also what about the pannels, i know in a factory they press it all out but is there other ways? i.e doing pannels in sections ect.
    thanks in advance.

p.s any websites ect would be helpful

Simple answer to that question was Yes, you can do all of that !!
    But that's not so helpful

Can't help on direct web sites.

    But big range of options.

    1. Modifying a car chassis to take other engines/suspension. Hot Rod community are BIG on that. Some of the surgery ther perform is impressive.

    2. Building own bodywork and monocoque. VERY hard, needs an engineering knowledge and good CAD design. Can be done but difficult ( Guy in Fife's got a Viper 'copy' he built from scratch !! )

    3. Build a chassis and fit aluminium 'straight' panels. Not too difficult. Use diemsions for suspension from donor cars etc and little 'panel beating' needed.

    4. Do 3, but go for custom fibreglass ( or eve c/f if brave ) and get a unique look - OR get a 'classic' look by making formers from an original example ( some Ferrari copies were done this way !!! )

    5. Go all out and build your own chassis AND suspension. The LoCost kit is the minimalist example of this and the book costs $10

    Questions to be asked are

    i) How much time to invest
ii) How much money to invest
iii) How skilled at engineering design and fabrication
iv) How is it going to be used
    v) If road, how will it get passed certification
vi) When it gets hard or it gets screwed who is there to help

Before launchign into designing and fabricating from scratch, I'd always recommend first try modding a stock car/chassis and build basic skills. THEN build a kit and ONLY THEN if that all went well consider trying to design/build from scratch. Find a local Hot Rodders or Kit car club and go along and observe and ask questions.

It's all do-able and possible, but how deep are your pockets and wide is your patience

Big general question are hard to answer. Universities do courses over 4 years on this topic But we can likely answer specific question very readily.

You guys might find this open source car project interesting. I am not a member but I think it would be fun, in a weird engineering sense.

It actually goes to the basics of a car. There are few types: body on chassis, unibody and tubular frame. I suggest you to google all these terms and read more to get the full understanding of what is what.
