Mercedes was the surname of Emil Jellinek’s (Daimler dealer in Nice, France. I think that he financed Daimler too) daughter.
He raced Daimler cars, but under the name “Mercedes”.
He once said that he would buy a large amount of cars if he was granted exclusive selling rights for Austria (he was Austrian), Belgium, France and another country (maybe USA but I’m not sure) and if he could sell them under the Mercedes name.
Mercedes was then widely used due to Daimler's name being licensed in some countries like UK.
But I’m not 100% sure.
