Girlfriends dad looking for a new car

He wants compact to midsized, 4 doors, and reliability above all else. He doesnt car about speed or luxury. He said corolla or something like it. I suggested lexus is300, he said no to luxury (price is not really an object). I said vw jetta tdi, he said maybe. I said honduh civic, he said that was #2 on his list. I said hyundai, he said probably not. He says no outright to american cars. He says no to beamers. Anyone here have a good suggestion? I think a corolla would be nice, but it would be cool if he got something a little cooler.

The A4 has the best "clunk" of any car on the market.

I would definitely go with either the Corolla, Mazda3, or a Jetta TDI. The last one is the best option, so long as he doesn't mind the diesel-ness of it

if the jetta was anything like our Y2k VW's, then it won't be reliable in the least...i say probably the civic. i know the corolla is a huge piece (we had a brand new rental corolla s about 2 months back, a total POS). i think the former model corolla was nicer though.

I find it really weird that Americans perceive VW's as being unreliable. They are one of the more reliable marques in the world. Compared to about every American marque that always gets the most negative reliability points here in Europe. This being one of the big reasons that American cars don't sell here along with 9 out of 10 really crappy interiors, engines that offer low power output compared to their displacement (taxes are a bitch) and mostly very bad chassis/suspension (too soft). And maybe you guys get our bad VW's ?

Anyway I don't care too much for VW, hate them in fact, but I think it's strange that they you see them as unreliable. On thing they do have is a good interior, quality stuff. Depressingly dark in the basic versions but good quality. And the TDI's are quite good, no reason whatsoever to get a petrol engine if you do a lot of miles. The VW petrol engines do suck in fact.

The Passat is called Yetta over there eh ? Or is it the Bora ?

As for the thread: What about a Mazda 6 ? Are they available over there ? Good looking car but I can't really comment on reliability. Toyota would be good but they are soooo boring. A Honda Accord is cool too.

well seeing as the are discontinuing the new bug in America because of its constant and frequent break downs, that might be why some hate them.

and there just plain ugly, and most trucks here could just run over it and not even feel a bump

Mazda3, I prefer the 5-door but sedans are nice too. Tell him to atleast test drive one. Compared to a Corolla or Civic, he'll pick it. IMO, 'three's' the class leader!!
