A quick way to change color in PS

If you have a picture such as the first attachment, then if you go to image > adjustments > hue/saturation, then you click the edit: dropdown arrow (upperleft of box) and select the color your car is, then adjust the hue until you have your car the color you want. simple right? theres just a few problems though:
1.cars have to be a simple color that is included in the dropdown menu
2.the color of the car cannot also be in the background
3.when you make some adjustments to the hue the car becomes not a solid color thoughout

i made the car in attachment 2 in a matter or 5 seconds

Hey illusionest, what is your 'long way'? I tend to use the paint brush, set to colour, then change the curves to get the exact colour I want - do you do it this way or something different?

very simple, k, heres my version

1)before modding ur car, airbrush all the parts 1st, like all the add ons and stuff, and DONT make any vents yet, nor any wide bodies.
2)ur last step is to change the color, THEN make the vents, or else hte vents will look stupid.
    3) F7 and u should see the layers, hit ctrl+shift+u to desaturate
    4) the layer becomes black + white, and then hit ctrl+u to open up the hue and saturation box. now hit colorize and play around with the colors, make sure the colors dont look fake (that always happens)
    5) after ur done that, just use the lasso tool and highlight around the parts u dont want colored (so the background) and hit delete.

    so simple!

How did you do it before?

If the background has similar color, just duplicate the layer and mask the background.
