Most women are good/reasonable drivers. The stereotype comes from the very visible few, who might apply make-up while driving, carry on a conversation as if they're just another occupant, shoulder check and change lanes into another car anyway, and some other traits which give all women drivers a bad rap. It might come from something they have to do, rather than something they enjoy doing, as driving is seen as a chore. This is the cause of many men being below average drivers as well.

Might also have something to do with most men being a little more mechanically inclined. Example: How many women have you heard talking intelligently about the tires they want? I've witness dozens of times a nice but clueless lady wanting to get some new tires. Speed ratings? Profile aspect ratios? UTQG ratings? Temp and grip ratings? You can't really know this stuff unless you really want to. Driving is the same way, however, ineptitude is a lot costlier?
