Can you insure a car older than 20 years?

I was just wondering, and if it were possible it would be more expensive right?

I mean what if someone had a immaculate 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. If I wasn't able to insure it I would be afraid to drive it.

You're best bet would be to ask a South African forum for this (if you are still in South Africa). The rules may even change by province. You could also call some local insurance agencies.

    ^^^ yes.

In general if you find car clubs who specialise in the model or classic cars in general they will ahve preferred insurers and discounts.

it only gets more expensive when you start wanting "guaranteed value", so thast IF you have an accident then the value of the car isn't in dispute.
I've seen non-guaranteed-value policies writing off classic cars adn offering a fraction of what the owner paid

Good luck with your local contacts

Here cars classified as classics (that's more than 25 years old) are exempt from road tax and have much lower insurance rates.

Our road tax was changed to be similar and then "frozen" in 1998 !
So if you're car is pre 1973, no road tax in 1998 and no road ax today.
BUT, if your car is a 1974 then despite it being now 36 years old it STILL pays full road tax liek the rest.
They refuse to change it to track.
British government just like milking motorists and WANT to remvoe classics from the roads and have eveyone buy a Nissan built in Sunderland

That's bad. However, in our case that means that newxt year an E30 M3 is classic and therefore it will be dramatically chaper to run than this year.

I *KNOW* Ferrer and THAT is what pisses me off about the Conservative government who made the decision and every one that has followed who have not opted to return the "right" to us. Instead happy to take the £400 a year

    Sorry for the late reply.

Well I was thinking that if it's a old car they would not be able to replace it so a "payout" would have to suffice.

    Which really sucks.

most decent insurance companies offer you choice of repairer and option to keep the wreck should you write it off.
i find they're cheaper to insure in general.

    ^^^ It's so-called ecological motives.
We ahve strong "green" minorities here
So if you run around in a puny <1litre squash box with very little CO2 then you are free.
The RX-8 is pushed into the highest class "polluter" and so they hit the hardest

SENSIBLE arguments like I do 8000 miles a year in mine and it is properly maintained yet some twat in a crappy car not maintained properly doing 20000 miles is most likely putting out double the CO2 over the year *I* am doesn't work. I think to be "green" you have to have ZERO logical analysis and have failed primary school arithmetic.

    grrrrrrr.

I know the feeling. Since my recent financial woes I've been doing less than 3,000 miles per year. Had a guy who drives his prius at 100mph at every opportunity and puts 25,000-30,000 miles on it per year lecture me on ecological responsibility. His last vehicle was an H2 which he drove similarly. Why I hate most greenies.

Agreed - sensible suggestions relating to ecological matters are ignored, and stupidity reigns supreme. It's the new way!
