    The Phaeton is dead--sort of.

It's just as everyone thought: The idea of a $100,000 Volkswagen didn't fly. The company will "temporarily suspend importation" of the Phaeton to the United States once the remaining 300 or so 2006 models have been sold. VW might still bring the next-generation car-aimed at the Mercedes CLS-to the States after its 2009 debut.

Is the Phaeton just not going to be imported to the US or is it not going to be produced any longer?

so why have a VW when you can have an audi for less? the question VW should have asked themselves

Serves them right. The A8 starting price is actually lower by $5,000 CDN in Canada. So bascially, why would you buy a VW when you can have an Audi? If the Phaeton would have been, let's say, $15,000 - $20,000 less, it would have been a smarter move. Seems like the Golf, Jetta, Passat popularity is going to their heads.

I'm just curious (because some of these have been sold), what the hell is a guy thinking when buying this?

    It can't be

The Bentley Flying Spur is based on the Phaeton, so it can't be that bad.

That's the whole point the A8 is more subtle, a $100,000 VW isn't.

It failed not because it isn't good, it failed because it makes too much of a statement.

How is looking like a Passat not subtle? If you are seen in an enormous Audi people know its expensive. When they see a phaeton they think "Was the Passat really that long?", AND it has a V-10 diesel which is so wonderfully wasteful.

I actually liked the Phaeton's exterior. The only thing I didn't like was that it was a platform sharer.
