Davidson, Barrichello, Rosberg, Button, Schumacher and Coulthard all miss out on the final shoot-out session. Qualifying specialists Webber and Trulli both lived up to their billing by squeezing into the top ten. Button got the better of Honda teammate Barrichello for the first time in a while. The Ferraris seem to be coping slightly better on the softer tyres than they were on the hard tyres, they managed to get the jump on the BMWs this time round. McLaren still looking imperious though...

Lewis Hamilton continues his sensational start to his Formula One career with his second pole position in a row. He had been playing second fiddle to Fernando Alonso all weekend long, with the champ topping the timesheets in every single session. But when it really mattered Hamilton managed to pull it out of the bag at the death to beat Alonso by one and a half tenths. The final few laps of qualifying were similar to Montreal 7 days ago when Alonso was looking the stronger of the two but made small but crucial, sloppy errors on his final flying lap which allowed Hamilton to sneak ahead and take the pole.

Ferrari showed some improvement in the final two sessions of qualifying, Massa and Raikkonen locking out the second row. The BMWs didn't quite live up to the expectations set by their practice pace, finishing a fifth and seventh. Heikkin Kovalainen put in probably his best qualifying showing of the season to split the BMWs in sixth. Trulli and Webber took a highly repectable eighth and ninth place respectively, with Giancarlo Fisichella putting in a disappointing display to round out the top ten.

    Provisional Grid

    1. Hamilton
    2. Alonso
    3. Massa
    4. Raikkonen
    5. Heidfeld
    6. Kovalainen

    8. Trulli
    9. Webber
    10. Fisichella
    11. Coulthard

    Quite.

I doubt that Alonso is that shallow - from what I have read he is not a glory seeker, so he should be relieved that the spotlight of the media is pointed elsewhere.

If the rumours are true, however, it would probably be to McLaren's advantage to have him leave.

If Hamilton is capable of bettering Alonso, why would they want to keep an expensive, underperformer around demoralising the team with childish moaning?

Ah, so that's why "You've Been Framed" was aired in favour of live qualifying...

And no explanation as to why, following a response to the hail of criticism after the race last week which stated that the press conference would be shown as part of the highlights, the press conference was not shown as part of the highlights.

    Some nonsense, yesterday

I have to admit, Hamilton is amazing.

I hear he's going to walk back across the surface of the Atlantic to Woking after the race tomorrow.

Hamilton is quite something, just unbelievable what he does in that car. Watching the post qualiy press conference on Speed, it certainly doesn't seem like Alonso enjoys finishing behind Hamilton just by looking at his body language, he seemed unhappy and kind of glared at Hamilton.

Kimi needs to pick it up, and Massa for that matter, but really Kimi can't last at Ferrari as the number 1 guy if Massa continues to outqualify him. He's gotta get it together.

The onus is really on Kimi, he was so hot in the past few years and has been nothing but disappointing this year, except for his maiden Ferrari victory in Australia.

I wanted him to win at the beginning of the season as I figured he deserved a WDC once or twice already, but he is driving pathetically compared with his less paid teammate. Come on Kimi, get your act together and start on fire like you were in 2003 and 2005.

    Enough about Hamilton.. please.

Yeah, he's really good and all, great composure and talent. But, he's in the fastest car on the grid.

He is beating the reigning champion, which has been world champion twice, in the same car, in his first year in F1. What he is doing is remarkable, wheter we like him or not.

So's the current reigning world champion, but that hasn't stopped Hamilton outqualifying him two weeks on the trot, has it?

First of all I don't like Alonso at all...but seen how Mclaren has improved so much in the last year and how Renault lost the pace, do you think that is because only money (mclaren spending more for the new era and Renault has cut off the money because they have achieved what they wanted), or has Alonso a special talent for engineering and giving backup to the engineers to develop the new car ?

I say that because, spanish media is telling that Hamilton wins because Alonso's backup and know-how for the car's setup
Life is too short to stay, race!

What did you expect? The blokes at Tele 5 wouldn't know a great race even if someone told them it was. They are so focused on Alonso that they can't see outside him.

Alonso might have helped, but I'm more inclined to think that it's money, or a conjuction of both at most.

Ralf is out again... thankfully not in turn 13 this year. He's very unlucky at Indianapolis...

EDIT: Coulthard and Barrichello are out also.
