I know I have nearly had an accident like this with a car travelling WAY below traffic speed - your brain sees it, and expects it to be travelling faster than it is and as a result not to be where you drive into it. I'm now more careful.

Sometimes being "safe" can be more dangerous. Don't take this as saying the Polo driver is not in the wrong (obviously she is) just that there can be some mitigating factors on her part of the accident.

unlucky, my mums seems to attract crashes, in the last 5 years she's had about 3 and written off 1! Shes had bikes drive into the side of her and take off, people appear at junctions in indestructible Volvos (smashed the whole of the Escorts bumper, the Volvo didnt have a mark!), worst one was when we got T-Boned by a Tesco Direct van, thats the fastest ive ever seen a car do a 270 spin!

What drakkie said is only made with the windscreen and the back window, if I'm not mistaken, but not with the side windows.

Of course if someone was speeding, another might be dead.

We were talking about the window in the Driver's door...See post 3.

Well, over a year on from that incident and I can happily report that the car's still fine. Luckily the damage was only cosmetic and was professionally repaired. It could have easily been so much worse.

Yes that's why I said that the treatment that makes glas "unbreakable" (as in not to get showered with it) is only made with the windscreen therefeore if one of the side windows breaks (in the case the one on the driver's door) you might get showered in glass because it's not treated.

    If that makes any sense...

An example of Chinese quality I'm afraid...and why outsourcing to China / India etc. can only be a bad thing.

EDIT: Albert, yeah I understand what you meant now and that you weren't contradicting me - thanks for clearing that up.

Clive, look up Chery Amulet, the Russians are trying to get it banned because there is no chance of survival ANYWHERE in the car... It's really quite a shock.

Yeah...what's worrying is that Alfa have just outsourced Chery to build 159s for them in China.

Hopefully the standards of the original design are upheld, instead of being reduced to this rubbish.

On a side note, I guess "copyright" means jack shit in China - most of their cars are blatant rip-offs of cars from Western manufacturers.

One things for sure though, if I ever go to China, I'm walking. Everywhere.

Or simply drive in a western-model car. They export European-spec cars to China, you know...

So do Mercedes-Benz and BMW, amongst other premium brands. It's in order to enter the chinese market competitively, if they imported the Alfa Romeos made in Italy the import taxes would be massive, and therefore the cars uncompetitive.

BMW even makes chinese-only cars, like the long wheelbase BMW 5-Series.
