Motortrend Car of the Year Announced...

    http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/...olt/index.html

hmmm...interesting choice. Not the choice I would have made but I guess under their criteria it makes sense, especially considering they gave it to the prius a few years ago.

I don't see why its a bad pick, not that I care for MT's opinion much of the time....

COTY awards are always about mass public vehicle. Prius was one step, this is another....

It's only JUST launched and it's COTY ?
Again the decision making process has lost the plot

Indeed , this award is just an ingenious marketing ploy aimed at reviving US sales.

A shameless plug! (and a shameful pun, I've just realized)

Obvious car of the year is obvious.

The Volt isn't exactly bad looking (it's rather bland), but when you compare it to it's twin (the Ampera), it becomes shockingly ovius that Chevy totally ruined the styling of a car that's ment to be one of the pioneers of electric drive. Painful, that is.

Isn't that usually how it works.....COTY award always happen at the beginning of the model year, for some weird reason...

That is pretty much universal from all the COTY award I've seen...

I really hate the differences between EU and US versions of cars. I feel like the companies are like, here Europe, here's our creative best, cutting edge of aesthetic ability design! You're a picky audience and you deserve our best.

Then they make one for the U.S. audience, and they're like, lol here yokels. Eat this crap, we know you bumpkins don't know the difference.

^^^ I'm confused ... who are the companies in question ?
Ford, for example, were well known for always chosing NOT to bring the latest European designs to the US because primarily cost.
If the market was there for the better versions at the right prices then it would happen.
I never did see it as a manufacturers "problem", but a customer expectation issue.

Maybe because it's gotten bigger and heavier with each iteration to cater to Americans?

Don't even get me started on Motortrend- they used to have different awards for "foreign" cars, and the new Ford Thunderbird (at that time) was their COTY. Talk about bullshit.

The deal with Volkswagen is this...they made the best small cars in the US market, they had the best features, best interiors, best engines, best ride, best technology. The problem was they were too expensive and nobody was buying them. Volkswagen figured out that nobody in the small/economy car world wants to move "upmarket" to another small/economy car and are mostly just shopping on price rather than actually looking for a "better" car.

So Volkswagen's new plan in America is to basically give us cars priced competitively with their competition and thus moved themselves down market. The inevitable problem being that the features/technology/comfort/etc...had to go down market to go along with the price.

Ultimately, as a car enthusiast this saddens me because I've always thought i would go with VW if i ever found myself in need of getting a compact car because they were the nicest and i feel like they had a level of class that the japanese cars dont. However, as a consumer with a brain, i realize this is a good move for VW.
