Two Porsche Rs Spyder Lmp2 Prototypes To Contest Mobil 1 Twelve Hours Of Sebring

A new dose of excitement, two Porsche LMP2 prototypes, will be thrust onto the American Le Mans Series scene starting with the 54th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 18.

The two Penske Porsche RS Spyder race cars, driven by six drivers who either hold Series or ACO titles, and who have won all the world's top endurance races, will compete at Sebring after an exhaustive, year-long development and test period which included an LMP2 victory for Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr at the 2005 season finale at Laguna Seca last October in what the Porsche factory called "a test race."

"Our organization is really looking forward to competing with the RS Spyder once again. Our test race in Laguna Seca provided invaluable experience for our Team as we continue on our learning curve in the Series," said Tim Cindric, President, Penske Performance, Inc.

"We have continued to work toward our goals of combining the efforts of two successful racing cultures to create a winning combination with a clean sheet of paper design. The two- car effort will add another dimension to our race weekend regiment and we hope the return of Penske and Porsche to Sebring will be as rewarding for the fans as it has been for our Team," said Cindric.

    GT1 and GT2 battle

March Madness? Yes, we have it. It's the annual rite of spring when sports car racing's best descend on central Florida for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. This year's 54th running marks the opening of the 2006 American Le Mans Series season, one that promises to be the Series' most competitive and compelling since it was formed in 1999.

There hasn't been an American Le Mans Series race with more compelling storylines than next week's 12-hour endurance classic. In all four competitive sports car classes there are plots, subplots and nuggets. Here are some relating to GT1 and GT2.

    GT2: VARIETY IS THE SPICE

After seeing its drivers and teams win GT2 from 2002-05, Porsche faces its toughest challenge yet in 2006. Eight Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs will be on the grid at Sebring, led by Series championship contenders Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing, Alex Job Racing and Flying Lizard Motorsports; that's the order they finished in the 2005 team championship. Other GT2 teams fielding Porsches at Sebring include J3 Racing (a runner-up at Sebring last year), Farnbacher Loles Racing and Vonka Racing.

Porsche is unbeaten in class at Sebring since the Series' formation. Last season the No. 31 Petersen/White Lightning Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Lucas Luhr outlasted the rest of the field for class honors. Some of the names for 2006 are different, but that doesn't diminish the expectations Porsche has for an eighth straight class win.

Standing in the way is a field full of entries representing the world's most prestigious manufacturers: Panoz, BMW, Ferrari and Spyker.

"This probably is going to be the strongest GT2 field I've seen in the Series," said Gunnar Jeannette, a driver for Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz who is teaming with Tom Milner Jr. and Champ Car star Bruno Junqueira. "It's shaping up to be a great year for competition. I think it definitely will be the class to watch."

Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz will field two Panoz Esperante GTLMs for Sebring and the full American Le Mans Series season. The Canadian team has taken over the development and competition aspects of the Panoz operation, and the results were overwhelmingly positive at the Series' Winter Test in January. Scott Maxwell posted the fastest time of the three-day session among all GT2 cars.

Team LNT, one of the most successful GT racing programs in Europe, also will field a Panoz Esperante GTLM at Sebring. It marks the race debut of the Esperante under the Team LNT banner with hopes of campaigning in several series in Europe and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Also new (in a way) is BMW Team PTG, which is back in the American Le Mans Series for the first time since 2003. Winner of the first Series GT team championship in 1999, BMW Team PTG will compete at Sebring and the full Series season with two BMW M3s. Both cars were at January's Winter Test where the team showed that it doesn't plan on missing a beat in its Series return.

"As a driver, it's fantastic," said Bill Auberlen, who will partner with Joey Hand and Ian James. "To come back into the American Le Mans Series with the BMW M3 is the best thing you can do in racing. I had so much success with Tom (Milner) and PTG. Then to reincarnate that relationship with Yokohama is a tremendous positive. This thing is going to be a winning program."

Ferrari and Risi Competizione also are back in GT2 after a one-year absence. The Risi team will field a new Ferrari F430 GTC at Sebring, with a second car competing at select Series events. It was a Risi Ferrari that ended Porsche's 21-race class winning streak at Lime Rock two years ago. Ferrari has a rich history of success in the American Le Mans Series with six class victories.

"This new car looks promising," said team owner Giuseppe Risi said. "Intense chassis development has resulted in increased stiffness, and the car features a new increased displacement engine design with more horsepower. I look forward to joining the battle with a stellar list of GT2 competitors, including Porsche, BMW and Lexus. The competition will be great for everyone—manufacturers, teams, drivers, fans, everyone."

In addition, Spyker Squadron will return to Sebring with two Spyker C8 Spyders.

    GT1: THE REMATCH IS JOINED

Last year's GT1 class race at Sebring was one of the most talked about and historic finishes in American Le Mans Series history. Aston Martin won its class in its first appearance at Sebring since 1983 with a stunning victory over the two-car Corvette Racing squad.

As in 2005, Aston Martin Racing will enter two DBR9s at Sebring with a lineup that includes drivers from last season (Darren Turner, Tomas Enge, Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin) and a couple of newcomers (Nicolas Kiesa and Jason Bright).

"Last year our performance at Sebring far exceeded our expectations but we're not underestimating the challenge this time, especially from the factory Corvette team," said Aston Martin Racing Team Principal George Howard-Chappell. "I've no doubt it's going to be a very tough race but I've every confidence that our drivers will give us the best possible chance of a good result."

Aston Martin Racing and Corvette Racing went head-to-head four times last year: Sebring, Le Mans, Petit Le Mans and the Monterey Sports Car Championships. Corvette Racing, with its Corvette C6-Rs, won the latter three to earn a bit of revenge from Sebring.

"Personally I like the hype," said Corvette Racing's Johnny O'Connell, who will team with Ron Fellows and Max Papis at Sebring. "This is really the best of the best: Europe's best taking on America's best. Both teams are very strong and hungry. The fans I know are in for a treat."

Corvette Racing also enters with five straight season team championships, and No. 4 mates Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta won the class drivers title in 2005. As was the case in 2005 and 2004, Jan Magnussen will join the two Ollies at Sebring, Le Mans and Petit Le Mans.

It's not a two-team battle though. Konrad Motorsports is returning to the Series with two Saleen S7Rs that are no strangers to Aston Martin and Corvette. Tom Weickardt, after campaigning a Dodge Viper from 2001-05, will drive one car with other drivers to be announced. Italian Paolo Ruberti, who has driven Saleens in the FIA GT Championship in the past two seasons, will drive the other Konrad Saleen along with two other yet-to-be-named partners.

the audi's will take 1,2,3, corvette will be 1,2, and mabye spyker will overthrow the 911 dynasty
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

Welter Racing has withdrawn their Peugeot powered WR from the 12 Hours of Sebring. Apparently, their shipping container was held up at the Le Havre port and missed the boat to transport the car across the Atlantic. They have ruled out shipping the car and spares with a cargo-jet, due to the costs as well as the time frame. The French team will now concentrate on preparing their cars for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the possibility of running some Le Mans Series races as well.

That will be quite a feat with only 2 Audis in the race.

I am thinking the Audi R10's will fight with the Dyson Lola B06/10s for the majority of the race, but the Audi R10's will get a 1, 2 and the Dyson Lola's will get 3rd and 4th . In LMP2 the Porsche RS Spyder's will fight with the Lola B05/40's and the Intersport Lola will get 1st a Porsche RS Spyder will get 2nd and the Binnie Motorsport Lola will get 3rd. In GT1 the Corvette's, Aston's, and Saleen's will be in a constant battle and in the end it will be a DBR9 in 1st, an S7R will be 2nd, and a 3rd for the other DBR9 In GT2 the Porsche throne will end with a win by Team LNT Panoz, followed by the Spyker Squadron Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R in 2nd, and the Team PTG BMW E46 GTR in 3rd.

New Cars In New Places Highlight Prototype Storylines At Mobil 1 Twelve Hours Of Sebr

Sebring, Fla. - Years from now, sports car fans around the world may look back at the 54th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and remember that it all started here.

The annual 12-hour endurance classic has all the ingredients to go down as one of the most memorable races certainly in the history of the American Le Mans Series, but also in professional sports car annals. It all starts with the Series' two prototype classes, both of which have entries that stand to rewrite history. Will they? The world will find out just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

    LMP1: New cars galore
The new season sees all American Le Mans Series' LMP1 teams in different cars than at the Monterey Sports Car Championships in October.

The most talked about, of course, is Audi Sport North America's two diesel-powered Audi R10s. Announced in December, Audi is attempting to become the first manufacturer to win the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-powered car. Even more promising for North American fans is that two R10s will compete in the second half of the American Le Mans Series season, starting with the Grand Prix of Utah in July.

The R10 is powered by a 5.5-liter, V12 diesel engine that produces more than 650 hp and 1,100 Newton-meters of torque. It is the most powerful diesel engine in the world, said Ulrich Baretzky, head of engine technology at Audi Sport. The diesel package will provide better fuel economy and a longer life, key qualities at races as demanding as Sebring and Le Mans. The R10 succeeds the Audi R8, which won 61 times in 77 races worldwide including 47 in the American Le Mans Series.

"It's a completely new challenge, especially as nobody has ever attempted to build such a powerful diesel racing-engine," said Emanuele Pirro, who won the 2005 class championship with teammate Frank Biela. "It seems like only yesterday that we started the R8 adventure, which actually finished up being much more successful that any of us ever dreamed. I hope that we'll have just as much success with the R10. And as with the R8 I'd again like to be the first driver to win with this car."

Pirro and Biela will team with Marco Werner at Sebring and Le Mans in the No. 1 R10. Seven-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello will drive the No. 2 car.

Despite the hype, Series regulars aren't backing down from Audi. Leading the charge is Dyson Racing, armed with two AER-powered Lola B06/10s. The new prototype made its debut at the American Le Mans Series Winter Test in January and also has tested at Road Atlanta.

"A beautiful piece of engineering. Lola and AER have done us proud," said James Weaver, driver of the No. 16 entry with Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace. "It is a quality piece of equipment. Compared to the old car, it changes directions much better, it is easier to drive, the aerodynamics are much more benign and it is not as sensitive to ride height as the old car. Straight out of the box, it is easier to drive and doesn't have any vices. The engine makes good power at the top end and the car is good over the bumps."

Aside from the new chassis from Lola, the two Dyson cars will feature a 3.8-liter, twin turbo V8 powerplant from AER. The new engine was designed from a clean sheet of paper specifically for the ACO's LMP1 regulations. Designed with the focus on durability, the engine is more compact than any existing V8 in the series.

During a recent test at Road Atlanta with the No. 20 car of Chris Dyson and Guy Smith, chassis and engine were working together in harmony with laps near 1:12 mark in a shakedown of the No. 20 car. The New York team has proven up to the task of challenging Audi with three overall wins the past two seasons with their Lola EX257-AERs.

Speaking of which, those cars will be back in the Series – albeit in different hands. Autocon Motorsports and Highcroft Racing each bought one Lola from Dyson Racing and will campaign them during the full Series season, including Sebring.

Leitzinger assisted Autocon during its first test in California last month, and Andy Wallace was with the Highcroft team at Sebring offering advice and laps.

"Hearing Butch's insights on what the car likes and wants was super-beneficial," said Autocon's Chris McMurry, who's moving up to P1 after finishing second in P2 last year for Miracle Motorsports. "We all picked up some useful pointers we'll use all season. As everyone knows, he's a great personality and consummate pro."

McMurry will team with Bryan Willman and team owner Michael Lewis at Sebring. The trio will rotate rides throughout the season.

Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing is making its American Le Mans Series debut with a car that has proved its worth in the past. Dayton, Rick Knoop and Gregor Fisken will drive Dyson Racing's former No. 16 car, which won twice last year in the American Le Mans Series.

"Purchasing the Dyson car was an opportunity to jump-start the team with a proven package, and we're hoping to get a new P1 car for 2007," Dayton said of his plans going forward. "We plan to continue where Dyson left off. There are some new developments (from AER) that will allow us to be even more competitive."

LMP2: Wide open for 12 hours
Both the defending Series and Sebring champions are back for 2006, but there is a long list of challengers that is headed by two of the most successful and storied names in sports car racing: Roger Penske and Porsche.

Sebring marks the full season debut of Penske Racing and its two Porsche RS Spyders, the first Porsche prototypes since 1998. The team scored a class victory at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca last year and features a lineup that rivals any other in the Series.

Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr, winners at Laguna Seca, will team with Emmanuel Collard in the No. 6 car. Former Alex Job Racing standouts Timo Bernard and Romain Dumas, who won four times with AJR in 2005, will team with American Porsche factory driver Patrick Long in the No. 7 entry.

"Our organization is really looking forward to competing with the RS Spyder once again," said Tim Cindric, President, Penske Performance, Inc. "Our test race in Laguna Seca provided invaluable experience for our Team as we continue on our learning curve in the Series.

"We have continued to work toward our goals of combining the efforts of two successful racing cultures to create a winning combination with a clean sheet of paper design," he added. "The two-car effort will add another dimension to our race weekend regiment and we hope the return of Penske and Porsche to Sebring will be as rewarding for the fans as it has been for our Team."

Intersport Racing, however, will have something to say about that. The Ohio-based team won five times last season in its new Lola B05/40-AER as driver Clint Field won his first drivers championship. For Sebring, he'll be back with father Jon Field and Liz Halliday in the No. 37 entry.

The Intersport team was only slightly off the pace of the Porsches at the American Le Mans Series' Winter Test, setting the stage for what should be a classic 12-hour fight.

"We're definitely going to want to beat them more because they are such a prestigious team," Clint Field said. "In other series, that's the team to beat. It'll be the same in the American Le Mans Series. We always try our hardest, but it will be more fun now because we have a benchmark to go up against."

Miracle Motorsports and B-K Motorsports are two teams that look to make an impact in 2006 after winning races last year. Miracle has won the last two Sebring races including a win last year in the team's Courage C65 and the first with KUMHO tires. Miracle is back, this time with James Gue and Andy Lally joining team owner John Macaluso.

B-K Motorsports brings its Mazda-powered Courage C65 to Sebring for the first time. The team announced at last year's 12 Hours that it would bring Mazda back to the highest level of professional sports car racing in North America. The team placed second at its debut at Road Atlanta in April, then posted its first class victory at Mid-Ohio. Guy Cosmo, Jamie Bach and Raphael Matos will share duties at Sebring.

Other class entries this week include Barazi Epsilon's AER-powered Courage C65. Binnie Motorsports' Lola B05/40 will race for the first time with its new Zytek engine.

The American Le Mans Series begins its 2006 season with the 54th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The 12-hour endurance classic is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EST Saturday at Sebring International Raceway. It will be televised live on SPEED Channel in North America and MotorsTV in Europe. In addition, Greenlight-Television will distribute the race worldwide to more than 510 million households. Qualifying is set for 2:35 p.m. EST Thursday. American Le Mans Radio will have flag-to-flag coverage available at www.americanlemans.com, along with IMSA Live Timing & Scoring.

Pirelli And Aston Martin Join Forces For 2006 Mobil 1 Twelve Hours Of Sebring

Pirelli and Aston Martin announce their participation in the 54th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the opening round of the 2006 American Le Mans Series.

"Since we returned to the Series in 2002 we have been seeking a top GT1 team to take on the factory Corvettes," commented Peter Tyson, vice president of Communications for Pirelli Tire North America. "The Aston Martins are a known winning force, witnessed by their performance at Sebring last year, and we will aim to supply them with the best rubber on the circuit."

Initial testing has already taken place at Vallelunga in Italy with very positive results. The team will run two cars with Tomas Enge (Czech Republic), Darren Turner (UK) and Nicolas Kiesa (Denmark) in the No. 007, while No. 009 will be driven by Pedro Lamy (Portugal), Stephane Sarrazin (France) and Jason Bright (Australia).

The choice of Sebring for the debut of this partnership is perfect; America's oldest established sports car circuit hosting two of the oldest recognized racing brands. Pirelli won its first race in 1907. Aston Martin's international racing debut was in 1922, when two cars competed in the French Grand Prix, rapidly establishing the marque's racing credentials.

"Aston Martin and Pirelli is a perfect match – both have a glorious past but both are totally modern companies at the top of their game using cutting-edge technology to produce market leading products," Tyson added. "The recent unveiling of the Aston Martin Rapide concept car on Pirelli tires at the Detroit Auto Show is a superb example of how our two companies can work together in addition to producing truly exciting high-performance road cars."
