Which thread is the correct thread for this car...?
I haven't been here in the last week.
Seriously, for $320000, there is an infinitely long list of cars I'd buy before this. IMO the new SL range is very ugly.
As Socrates said — usefully as well as famously — 'what shall we call it?:'
over-kill
Pronunciation: \ˈō-vər-ˌkil\
Function: noun
Date: 1958
1 : a destructive capacity greatly exceeding that required for a given target 2: an excess of something (as a quantity or an action) beyond what is required or suitable for a particular purpose — publicity overkill — an overkill in weaponry — 3: killing in excess of what is intended or required.
It makes a Dodge Viper make sense while simultaneously rendering it pointless. What other cars can we say that about?
I'm erudite ;-)
Maybe the super uber extreme Pagani Zonda and the Ariel Atom variants also file under the same profile that the Quail talked about.
No. Neither the Zonda FXX rival and supercharged Atom make the viper both pointless and sensible — at least not in the way I was thinking about them — and I'll tell you why:
• The Atom isn't a roadcar. I'ts a wingless formula car with lights that work.
• The Zonda is a supercar, the SL65 AMG isn't, nor is the Viper.
• The Viper is a musclecar, and the AMG cars are too. The Viper racecars are still musclecars just as the old Trans-Am racers* were.
The exact meaning of the term musclecar, as defined by UCP's avian armchair racer, is a slippery thing. The rules contradict each other, and there's quite a no-man's-land between the absolutes of musclecar and large-displacement sportscar/supercar.
As 'Quail's got it figured, a Musclecar meets these criteria:
1. It's front engined. This rule is hard and fast.
2. It's rear-wheel drive (and I mean especially the Toronado).
3. It has at least eight cylinders.
4. The engine should have an ocean of torque, with the hp figure left for shiny-shoed salesmen's pandering.**
* Historic Trans Am Index
** An F1 engine has over 600hp and about 280 lb-ft of torque; a musclecar does the opposite.
So, 'Quailthinks, the SL65 AMG should be measured against musclecars.
Of course, there are many ways to think about it; some, admittingly, including comparisons with cars like the Atom. But as I've said many times, an old Formula Ford car would cost a fraction as much and be rather an embarrassingly lot faster.
I'm erudite ;-)
Yeah, those are good points, if you argue it that way.
I argued the Zonda because it's cheaper/older brethren are only a little bit faster- it's not much of an improvement. How much faster are you going to get?
The bits about the Atom are true though.
